Lamest excuse ever: Justice Department blames nonrelease of torture documents on the Daily Show.
Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 03:44 AM by JDPriestly
The Justice Department hypothesizes that future vice presidents will refuse to cooperate in investigations of their criminal conduct if their conduct could become the subject of Daily Show satire.

President Obama, where are you? Is your Justice Department seriously that afraid of the Daily Show's using its First Amendment rights for their intended purpose which is -- keeping politicians like you now and after you are out of office honest and humble.

Here's the report on Huffington Post.

Justice Department lawyers told the judge that future presidents and vice presidents may not cooperate with criminal investigations if they know what they say could become available to their political opponents and late-night comics who would ridicule them.

"If we become a fact-finder for political enemies, they aren't going to cooperate," Justice Department attorney Jeffrey Smith said during a 90-minute hearing. "I don't want a future vice president to say, 'I'm not going to cooperate with you because I don't want to be fodder for 'The Daily Show.'"

Is the Justice Department trying to outdo Jon Stewart in the department of absurd logic.

Dear Justice Department. Why do you suppose you have the power of the subpoena? Why do you think that courts have the power to put parties in jail for contempt? Who is in charge here? Has been politicians or officers of the court? Let's see it for the rule of law rather than the rule of fear. Please. For a change. Rule of law not rule of fear.

And thank you Jon Stewart and Daily Show. You alone are keeping the country honest. The Justice Department is no longer in that business. The Justice Department has decided that keeping dishonest politicians happy is more important that bringing criminals to justice.

7. I'm not sure it is even possible to satirize this..
Just play it straight with one of Stewart's patented :wtf: looks at the camera and the audience should go into hysterics.

3. "people might make fun of me!"
On the one hand, it sounds like logic the Bush administration would have used which pisses me off.

On the other hand, Cheneybush would have thought that, but publicly found a way to blame it on 911.

Perhaps this is the transparency we were supposed to be expecting - they're telling us their real motivation for making f'd up decisions.

5. That Eric Holder is one classy AG!
If it is not smearing gay Americans with every slander under the book to help John Ensign 'defend marriage' then it is saying that criminals in the Executive Branch should be protected from satire!
Is Holder a real attorney, with a JD? Has he passed the bar? He seems petty and weak and craven and all of the things most attorneys are, but he seems to lack the basic ability to argue a case without looking like a stooge, a shill, a patsy, a hack.
There is not one thing on Holder's resume that is not in someway shameful. When Obama met Holder, that is when I knew we were in for a right ward ride.

I am still living in bizarro America? How the hell did we devolve to the point at which the Daily Show is the premier government critic? Seriously?
