Darn. The Cheney 22nd amendment thing looks like a hoax.

It was mentioned on Rachel Maddow today that someone told her that Cheney had given a speech at Camp LeJeune and had (it was rumored) said that the 22nd Amendment might be suspended for the 2008 elections. A few blogs are reporting that it was a story in the New York Times:
http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&tab=wb&q=cheney+camp+LeJeune+22nd+amendment++&btnG=Search+Blogs
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&q=cheney%20camp%20LeJeune%2022nd%20amendment&sa=N&tab=bw

Well.... I'm sitting here waiting for some pages to load, and I thought I'd check up on it. (For those of you not on dialup, we set a bunch of things to loading, and then come back to the first one and work through them. At least *I* do.....)

So, I *do* find this, which I believe to be the source of the story:
http://www.newyourketimes.com/content/article76649.html
With an official-looking masthead. However, take a close look at the URL. Turns out it's registered in Brea, CA:
http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=www.newyourketimes.com&tld=com

A NY Times search and a regular news search turn up zip (even making it as general as possible--just "Cheney" and "Lejeune").

Darn--I really wanted him to really have been that blatant.....

2. I don't think she got taken directly--

someone told her orally, and she was repeating what they said and asking if anyone could confirm it.

Edited to say that I edited original post to reflect this.

3. You really can't put anything past this crew.
Even the absurd sounds plausible anymore.

They'd have to do more than void the 22nd amendment. They'd have to cancel the elections outright. That's my greatest fear. They won't leave voluntarily.
