Their team won???

Meanwhile, in Tehran... :eyes:

ON EDIT: original news story posted was from 2000.
Only two hits on Google News for this one. :eyes:
Read it on twitter, which now is faster than the Internet for news.

L.A. Lakers fans celebrated their NBA championship victory Sunday night (June 14) by rioting outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Eyewitness reports said that the police officers at the scene were being belted with rocks and bottles. There are also reports of fans starting fires, although it isn’t clear at this stage whether those fires included buildings or vehicles. One unconfirmed report says that at least one police vehicle has been set on fire. Live footage at 9:15pm local time from a local television station clearly shows rioters attacking signs and shop fronts. Police control of the area at this time would appear to be limited, with vehicle traffic having to turn away as they approach the rioters.

More when we have it.

9:30pm PDT Update: Twitter users near the scene are warning people to stay away from the Staples Center Riot area and surrounding streets, describing the scene as chaos. More reports of fires being lit.

9:33pm PDT: just grabbed this shot from a live video feed showing rioters attacking a taxi. Immediately after this shot was taken, other vehicles were surrounded and attacked.

but give the crowd a sports victory and they start burning police cars.

48. LAPD Chief.... "Knuckleheads"... FFS. those crazy kids, gotta love 'em...
FFS.

At least 25 fans were arrested on suspicion of rioting and looting in downtown Los Angeles, following the Los Angeles Lakers' clinching of the NBA championship Sunday.

Los Angeles police said that some of the department's cars were vandalized, other cars were set aflame, fireworks were set off, a store's window was shattered and a gas station was looted. Some revelers walked up the on-ramp to the 110 Freeway and cheered passing cars, according to authorities.

LAPD Chief William J. Bratton called the revelers "knuckleheads" and "cowards."

The Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-to-86 in Game 5 played in Orlando, Florida.

35. Had a gf in Ypsi
She got in a serious crash in Detroit at 3-4 am. She was drunk, so were the girls in the other car. Amazingly, no one hurt. Cops were right there when it happened, broke up the inevitable stupid drunk people argument that ensued and everyone went home. No charges filed, no insurance claims, her car was totaled and she left it there. Drove by the same intersection two months later and it was still there, twisted up on the side of the road. It's near-anarchy up there.

62. This was in Detroit.
And she's not my girlfriend anymore--this was years ago and as you can probably guess from the anecdote, she wasn't the most stable girl in the world.

My point is not that she was a model citizen, but that, when confronted with a crash between two drunk drivers, the cops opted to do nothing, report nothing, and that whether or not it was her responsibility, there was a, abandoned, wrecked car on the side of the road at a fairly busy intersection, and the city did nothing. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it was still there.

76. Way to read your own link. The "history" you speak of was the 1984 World Series.
1984 was more than a Biblical generation ago! LA has had several MAJOR riots in that time span, while Detroit has had none. But if it makes you feel better, keep thinking "Detroit, 1984! Detroit, 1984!" while they loot and burn LA yet again! :hi:

From your link:

"Since the 1984 rioting that followed the Tigers World Series victory, they uniformly informed me, the Pistons had won two championships and the Red Wings three without any civil disturbance. Detroit had turned over a new leaf since '84, and I owed the now peaceful city an apology for branding it a world leader in championship rioting."

(My note: The Detroit Red Wings have won one more Stanley Cup since this writings, and were eliminated in a game 7 in Detroit this past Friday. Still no riots!)

<snip>
LOS ANGELES - Hundreds celebrated in the streets outside Staples Center after the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA title win Sunday night, with some revelers damaging police cruisers, throwing rocks and bottles at officers and setting bonfires in the street, authorities said.

About 25 people were arrested, most part of a rowdy crowd that split off on to surrounding streets after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, police officer Karen Rayner said.

Several police cruisers were damaged and reinforcement officers were called in from throughout the city to help disperse the crowd, Rayner said.

Aerial television footage showed people jumping on a police car, rocking vehicles attempting to pass through the crowd, setting small trees on fire and throwing fireworks and flares set up by police. No injuries were reported.

A gas station was looted and several cars, buses and a news van were vandalized, police said.

93. Alcohol was available 50 years ago, too
but I don't remember cities being demolished when sports teams won championships in, say, the 1950s or 1960s.

Granted, alcohol may have been a factor...but there is something else afoot recently, too.

45. I still can't figure out why they don't use water
Just bring up a fire truck with a water cannon and spray these people down good and proper. Being soaking wet takes a lot of the fight out of you. You don't even have to use it at a force to injure people -- just hose them down good and proper. If need be, you can crank up the pressure a notch and keep them moving along.

It's just a question of what will set them off.

59. It is a kind of barometer, isn't it?
But, as you indicate, it's doesn't get set off for just anything.

Stolen elections in the US, for example....nothing.

And to say they represent Lakers fans, or are typical of them, makes one as stupid and irresponsible as the rioters.

75. It's the way they get treated by the major sports announcers
Once someone from SA asked why the Spurs never got much respect from them & they were told "because the team is too nice & the fans don't riot." The Spurs & their fans haven't looked back since.

(could be wrong) and boy were folks pissed when that article ran! Which is why I don't pay any attention to ESPN & co...they're all asshats if that's their reason for dissing the Spurs all the time.

69. The people that do this crap are the same idiots that are in and out of jail
They have no respect for the Lakers organization. They have no self respect. They have no class or sense. They are thugs and criminals.

REAL Laker fans were too busy savoring the moment to even consider that crap.

This goes for all sports teams who have assholes like that going crazy over winning. These idiots shame their teams.

87. The vast majority of fans for any team do not do stupid things like this.
LA is also NOT the only place this happens . . . but its stupid wherever it happens.

People have lots of pent up frustrations these days - we're in a tough spot after the Bush years. Stupid things happen. No excuse but its not a big shock.

96. This happened the first time the Chicago Bulls won
an NBA championship, courtesy of Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan. I lived in Chicago and I could hear it happening. Why there had to be criminal acts and casualties to celebrate something positive is beyond me.

They won 5 more NBA titles, but every year they had PSAs from Michael and Phil asking people to please celebrate responsibilty.

We've got 17 banners hanging in the rafters. And we've got the most players in the NBA Hall of Fame. But I have to give the Lakers their props. They won it this year, fair and square. Congratulations to LA.
