Under the title "TILLER CARED," the following letter appeared in the Wichita Sunday paper today (6-14-09):
Over the years, there have been so many people wanting to demonize George Tiller that there has been little or no publicity about the good things he has done.
I have known Tiller since he was a sophomore in high school. He was my physician for several years and performed both of my minor surgeries.
Many years ago, I was walking into a local hospital to visit a friend. At the door I encountered Tiller, his wife, and a young lady in a wheelchair. Tiller let the others proceed while he remained at the door with me. He then explained that the young woman was his patient. He had advised her to carry full term. Her parents had kicked her out of the house for getting pregnant. The Tillers took the lady into their home, where she lived until it was time to deliver the baby. This was the day.
Another physician friend told me that the above story was a common occurrence. Tiller himself told me that he adjusted his charges according to what the patient could afford to pay.
