Freepers planning a Fire Letterman Rally outside Ed Sullivan Theatre
Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 02:12 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel
Yes, it's every bit as stupid as it sounds.

"I am pleased to report that we have received enough volunteer leader commitments from the now 2,253 people on this mailing list to make a FIRM DECISION to go forward with a planned FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN RALLY, currently scheduled to be held from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm this Monday June 15 outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, located at 1697 Broadway in New York City.

If you live anywhere within a 4 hour driving distance of New York City, please plan on attending this event. Bring your own signs (be creative but PG rated!). We will be announcing more details over the weekend so stay tuned. We need more volunteers to help our “Project Servant-Leaders”, so please email me at michaelpatrickleahy@gmail.com if you can provide some time."

from:

Since Carrie Prejean fizzled out, I guess they need a new "cause" to beat into the ground.

Dave is the new Public Enemy No. 1 with the idiot set.

Any creative folks in NYC with a video camera? Someone with a good sense of humor could have some real fun messing with these idiots from the Palin Fan Club.

---
The only thing more funny is the replies Freepers are getting from CBS and Dave's sponsors - which are, well, none at all.
Form letters everyone, and only Olive Garden mentions the "controversy," but isn't dumping Dave.

6. Simple answer: No
If you watch "shut Up and Sing," the excellent documentary on the awesome Dixie Chicks, you find yourself asking that question a lot. As they tour and in city after city, dwindling crowds of 2-3 losers manage to turn out to protest.

They become completely laughable, and you really wonder if these people have any sort of life outside of their conservative radio shows and Web sites.

7. While I'm not a Sarah Palin fan...
and I don't think Letterman should be fired, I still believe that a politician's children should be off limits.

It used the irritate the hell out of me when Rush Limbaugh picked on 13 year old Chelsea Clinton.

.... when he lit into 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton in 1993. "Everyone knows the Clinton's have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?" Limbaugh said on TV, before holding up a picture of Chelsea.
http://www.buzzflash.com/farrell/04/03/far04008.html

Sarah Palin is a big enough target to pick on (and is fair game). There's no reason to tell sexual jokes about her kids.

Sarah Palin jokes are funny. Jokes about her kids are in poor taste and result in her gaining sympathy and support that she couldn't win otherwise.

Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 03:25 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel
He's not going to apologize to the Palins, who distorted the joke and tried to claim he was advocating the rape of a 14-year-old.
He know canned outrage when he sees it, and good for him.

I think his response fit the circumstances. And most reasonable people would think so.

What more do the wingnuts want?

They want him off the air and humiliated, but not really for any supposed language toward women (this is the Limbaugh fanbase after all)

The right's just trying to stretch this out and blow it out of proportion, because they're still mad that Dave helped embarraa McCain/Palin last fall and that he dares make fun of Rush.

This has nothing to do with respect for women.

Or they would have went after Leno's similar joke about Bristol and John Edwards just as hard.

And they would have called on Rush and Savage and all the others to clean up their acts, if they were erious.

The Palins want it both ways: They want to be public figures, but have control over how the public reacts to their antics.

said in an interview that abstinence is not realistic and is now on an abstinence tour

That is a line being crossed

she put herself in the public forum hypocritically pushing something she doesn't believe in and holding up her baby(her big mistake) as a warning to others - she is fair game

Sarah is using Bristol who is using Tripp

43. Remember that the daughter who was at the game was Willow...
who is only 14 years old.

It started when Letterman made a joke on his late night show this week that one of Palin's daughters had been "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez at a New York Yankees game. He later acknowledged that the joke was in poor taste, but said he was referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin, an unwed mother.

However, it was her 14-year-old sister Willow who attended the game - and that set off Palin, the Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee last year.

Bristol is fair game as she has made herself a public figure.

39. Your post begs this question:
Did you believe for one nano second that if Chelsea had become pregnant at the age of 17 and given birth that the Clinton's would have condoned her posing for the cover of People magazine in her graduation robe with her baby and then hypocritically preach to the rest of us about abstinence?

It NEVER would have happened.

So, Bristol Palin either needs to remove herself from the public spotlight and stop taking checks for lecturing others on practices she knows and has admitted are unrealistic and which she did not practice herself, or she is open to any criticism or examination she gets.

41. The daughter who attended the game with her mother was 14 year old Willow...
not Bristol who is nineteen years old.

Letterman had joked that Palin's daughter "was knocked up" by a player at a New York Yankees baseball game. Letterman seemed to be referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin, an unwed mother. But it was her 14-year-old sister Willow who was at the game with family members.

Bristol, as you point out, has been in the public spotlight.

Bristol Palin — Sarah Palin's 19-year-old-daughter and unwed mother of 4-month-old Tripp — has been blog-blistered this week for her debut as an Abstinence Ambassador for the Candies Foundation. She made the rounds of the morning shows, appeared at a town hall meeting for National Teen Pregnancy Awareness Day and declared herself committed to discouraging behavior that would leave other girls in the same predicament she finds herself in. "Regardless of what I did personally," she told Chris Cuomo on Good Morning America, "abstinence is the only ... 100% foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy." (Read: A Brief History of Abstinence.)
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1896815,00.html

Bristol is a public figure and is IMO fair game. Perhaps Letterman's joke writers felt that she was the daughter at the game. If that's not the case and they knew it was the younger daughter, then that joke was in bad taste and not funny.

The Clinton's would have had every right to be upset if a comedian joked about their daughter having sex with a baseball player.

Be aware that I suspect that Sarah Palin is using the incident to her advantage. That's not Willow's fault.

47. I feel CHILDREN of celebrities or politicians should be off limits...
children to me are those who are too young to to have a driver's license. (Not a learner's permit.) Obviously 18 year old young adults are not children as they are old enough to join the military and be sent to foreign lands to kill people or die "for their country".

I should have posted that distinction.

But at the same time, I also believe that the comments that Don Imus and his crew made about the Rutgers University women's basketball team were way out of line.

On the April 4 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, which is comprised of eight African-American and two white players, as "nappy-headed hos" immediately after the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, called the team "hard-core hos." Later, former Imus sports announcer Sid Rosenberg, who was filling in for sportscaster Chris Carlin, said: "The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors."

McGuirk referred to the NCAA women's basketball championship game between Rutgers and Tennessee as a "Spike Lee thing," adding, "The Jigaboos vs. The Wannabees -- that movie that he had." McGuirk was presumably referring to Lee's 1988 film, School Daze (Sony Pictures), though co-host Charles McCord misidentified it as "Do the Right Thing" (Criterion, June 1989).
http://mediamatters.org/research/200704040011

In this case, the girls were not seeking to be celebrities and had done nothing except play great basketball to deserve attention.

I also find myself in agreement with the National Organization of Woman's assessment:

Offender: David Letterman on "Late Show with David Letterman"

Media Outlet: CBS, aired 6/8/09

The Offense: Late night TV host David Letterman "joked" that during their recent trip to New York, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter "was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" during a Yankees baseball game. The next night Letterman said that the hardest part of Palin's trip was "keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter."

NOW Analysis: After two nights of "jokes" at the expense of Palin and her family, Letterman tried to explain himself and offer something of an apology. On his June 10 show, Letterman said he was referring to Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol -- not the 14-year-old daughter who actually accompanied Palin on her New York trip. Letterman said "I recognize that these are ugly" jokes. NOW agrees. Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman's stature, who appears on what used to be known as "the Tiffany Network" (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.

On that point, it's important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the "White House dog." NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives.

44. Are you talking about Bristol or Willow?
Bristol is now 19 and has decided to become a public figure herself.

Her sisters Willow and Piper are 14 and 7.

I can understand your anger and feelings toward Bristol. I don't believe that the two younger daughters have done anything to deserve attention.

Willow was the daughter at the game.

13. Fear not, good citizen -- Conan and Dave are pretty tight
Dave was Conan's mentor -- well, one of them. Yes, even across network lines. (Cue "Ebony and Ivory" -- or "CBS and NBC".)

Then, most of their fan base(s) have Tivo and other PVRs.

Conan is likely to have Dave on as a guest. And besides, NBC wants him in that spot for as long as Jay reigned.

The only real loser will be the Family Palin. After all, all news cycles end. Not that they won't try to stretch it as much as possible.

21. Gaining Sympathy for Palin
I agree that Letterman's remarks are gaining sympathy for Palin and her family. What was Letterman thinking when he went from making insulting and funny remarks about Palin to denigrating her children? I just don't get it. Does he have a brain in his head? I don't care whether or not Palin had the bad judgement to set her kids in front of the cameras during the campaign. That is no reason for Letterman to sit in the stupidity section with her and make degrading remarks about a teenage single mother. It was ridiculous and hurtful to a young girl who is trying to grow up under the tutelage of a loony mother..

Should he be fired? No. But his closest advisors should sit down with him and ask him if he's feeling exhausted and if he needs some time off, or perhaps he should take a second look at the abilities of his writers.

28. and even that is a lie, her daughter is actually 15
according to the birth announcement in the ADN.

Palin is saying she's 14 to garner more pity, I guess. Or she doesn't know how old her children are. Or there's some other reason she wants the public to think Willow is a year younger than she is. I have no idea. All I know is that her age has been changed on Wiki to reflect the current claim, but the doctor's report and the news both say 1994 was the year of birth for Willow. Given Sarah's track record (no pun intended), I have to go with the doctor and the paper.

has been underway for years and there's probably no stopping it. Look at all the support that effort received here when there was an effort to get Imus. It's the same principle at work here.

Why aren't the Speech Police satisfied with fighting speech with more speech, rather than taking it to the extreme of silencing an opposing view? I guess since they'll never go for that, there's also no hoping that they'll grasp the concept of changing the channel.

34. These dipshits never watch Letterman anyhow.

They're blindly following their orders given to them by their hatemongering leaders Limbaugh, Hannity, et al.

I wonder if they would even recognize Dave if he were to walk by them.

38. I was thinking the same thing.
To even see the show you have to stay up superlate or record/TiVo it. Plus, it's the type of show right-wingers specifically don't "get" - hip, cerebral (sometimes), funny. I'll bet not 5% of the "Letterman is a pedophile" nutbags have the faintest idea who they're talking about.

Such fools. Such fools.

They say they have a firm commitment from over 2200 assholes.

It would really surprise me if even 200 showed up.

These clowns have always been all talk and no action.

Thanks in advance.

as long as they involve looking under tables and chairs for nonexistent WMDs

the ones they lied about and the reason why over 4000 American troops and countless Iraqi people are now dead

I'll bet all those dead people are still laughing like hell...

64. Won't they need some kind of permit?
The theater is right on Broadway and I can't see the NYPD taking to kindly to an unauthorized bunch of nuts blocking a side walk and maybe even traffic (like there'd be that many of them) at rush hour.

When Letterman does something outside the theater it usually doesn't look like it's on Broadway.

no one's gone and killed anyone because of Letterman's joke. If Letterman deserves to be fired for that, then O'Reilly, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity et al should've been on their asses a LONG time ago.

82. I've been outside that theatre while the show was being taped
and any protesters will find no sympathy from that crowd. There's always a huge crowd gathered hoping to see Dave walk out to the street for a stunt, or prior to the show, hoping for stand-by tickets.

86. I just heard Failin 'accepted' Dave's apology.

That predictable response by her can only be explained by knowing that it was finally made clear to her by her handlers that her faux indignation was making her look like more of a putz than she already was.

Plus, I have to think they couldn't come up with enough simpleton freeper types to show up at the ES Theatre to make it look like a halfway decent protest. I saw somewhere that over 2000 'said' they would be there but what freeper types 'say' they will do and what they do in reality have always been two distinctly different things. I have to laugh every time I think of OxyRush's Operation Chaos and how that fell flat on its face. Same thing here.
