By definition, Isn't the very meaning of DU that Flamewars should be tolerated, even encouraged?

By definition, Isn't the very meaning of DU that Flamewars should be tolerated, even encouraged?

Maybe this is what we are about. Many of you have steered me towards great art, like "V for Vendetta" and more important non-fiction works regarding the last eight horrific years.

Sure, we disagree about many core issues, but I am guessing that is the very point of locations like this.

We will not always agree on key issues, and the argument itself among us is potentially the very point of having a website like Democratic Underground.

Sometimes, very cliche'd posts are approved of beyond reason.

Sometimes, very novel but intelligent posts are dismissed beyond reason.

No?

Yes?

1. Flamewar, to me, means arguments without rationalization or thoughtful debate
I think that given everything, DU handles debate and quashes flamewars rather reasonably.

3. Perhaps so. I am open to opinions on this matter.
I agree that the DU handles things very--even incredibly--well.

5. a flamewar, or argument without reasoning, is futile in here
I like that flamewars are closed down here once debate has regressed into name calling. It causes us to sharpen our wits and have facts to fall back on. "oh yes well, you're a dootyhead" is so much weaker than "you are so incredibly incorrect because....fact #1,#2,#3, and here is documentation to back up my claim"

It keeps us sharp

2. Yes, I think so.
My complaint, if/when I have one, is with the use of harsh, vulgar language. I don't mind disagreements AT ALL, but I object STRENUOUSLY when people who disagree with someone do it in a disagreeable way.

4. Just so there is no confusion: This post is not critical of DU at all.
The admins and mods here are amazing. It's more about we users, or at least that was my intent.

6. I prefer not to post to flaming debates...though I have and have gotten more
responses than a 'normal post'..though responses is not why I post my opinion and most times..I am disagreed with? (I know..do not end a sentence with a preposition)..that too, gets them going!

PS..I ALWAYS do spell-check before posting! ALWAYS!

7. K&R for spirited, intelligent debate.
The other stuff is often fun as well, especially as a spectator sport.

9. Yes.
What would the point be if we all agreed?
I mean, what a massive waste of time that would be.

10. Some things are just too stupid
to even have a flamewar about! :P
