Notoriety's Missing Links
Online Files Scrubbed After Museum Shooting

Shortly after authorities identified their suspect in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting Wednesday, the world began searching for traces of James W. von Brunn online. Those who Googled immediately were able to find him: a personal Web site claiming Jewish "conspiracies," diatribes posted on message boards. But those who started their hunt just a few hours later would have found only empty holes -- information that was scrubbed away as Web sites figured out how to address the fact that they had once hosted the words of an accused murderer.

I wrote:

I hope that the exposure will reveal what Free Republic really is, a poorly designed "forum" where uninformed immature white men and a few white women hurl insults all day long at anybody who is a Democrat, or votes for Democrats.

This is not the first time a miscreant has turned out to be someone who posted on Free Republic.

Mommy's basement dwelling Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, mailed threatening letters laced with white powder to Nancy Pelosi, David Letterman and other high-profile figures.

His name on Free Republic was Chad Castagana.

Scott Roeder was User 2261860 on Free Republic.

"The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic. <...> The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent." - Oliver Wendell Holmes
