Large Majority Backs Major Overhaul of Health Care

The latest Diageo/Hotline Poll finds that 62% of voters support "the President enacting a major overhaul of the U.S. health care system," with 38% of voters strongly supporting a major overhaul.

Specifically, one-third (35%) of Republican voters, 64% of Independent voters, and 87% of Democratic voters support a major overhaul of health care.

Among age groups, while a majority all age groups support reforming health care, senior citizens age 65+ are the least supportive, with 56% of them supporting reform. Likewise, a majority of income categories support reform, but those earning $100K+ in annual income are the least supportive, with 58% supporting reform.

For the latest, check out our Daily Pulse of health care politics.

1. Ah. Nice to know the super wealthy and the super old are thinking of others.
I bet the elderly who are super wealthy are just a joy to be around. :eyes:

At least the majority of Americans are behind this. The gop heels-in-the-sand act will speak volumes of how they really feel about the American people.

2. The elderly already get theirs, don't they, via Medicare. So
what do they care?

3. Medicare worked very well for me, everyone should have
something similar. Our kids and grandkids need help now. Why are some so concerned about the govt. running health care when medicare works. The cost of health care is outrageous, but, hopefully with the govt. running the operation they could reduce the cost through controlling waste and profit to the corps. Bottom line, I don't want corps deciding what treatment I can have and what Dr. I must use.

4. It's working fairly well for my dad, though every
year I hear about more and more limitations with it.

I am under the retired military plan called Tricare. It's very reasonable and provides fairly decent healthcare, which is more than many people have.

I don't know why they can't model reform against one of these.

10. The limitations and underfunding will kill it, which is how they intend it.
Expanding it to everyone should save it. If it's implemented like John Conyers bill HR 676, it should be the most comprehensive and cost effective plan we can come up with. Obama could get it done if he has the will to do it.

7. Jeez, I get Medicare and I want everyone to get it.
I work all the time to educate people about it and I pester my elected leaders about it. The majority of us do want single payer health care just like we have to be extended to everyone via John Conyers bill HR676.

8. Your outlook is logical and one I would think elderly people would
embrace, but according to that poll, they don't. I don't know; maybe it's the way the question was worded? I'd think anyone with kids, grandkids, etc., would want them to have the same benefits.

9. I think it's the way it's worded. Also, many elderly don't really understand the
issues and think that Medicare will be taken away from them. It's a scary thought when you can't go back to work or have time to start over again.

6. Well we are going to probably get a major overhaul but we won't get single payer.
