Our mantra isn't "Buy American". The mantra is "Make American".
The flag flying on the company headquarters don't mean squat to me.

If a GM or Ford vehicle is manufactured in Mexico or Canada, it is the same to me as one made in Japan or South Korea (no, I don't care if the parts were shipped from Ohio to Mexico and the final car shipped back).

A pair of Levi's made in Mexico is the same a a pair of GAP jeans made in Indonesia.

When the corportists show some loyalty to the American worker, I ĺl show loyalty to an "American" company.

So when I am not wearing my German made Birkenstocks, you'll find me in my American union-made New Balance trainers.

1. How about when Toyota makes a car here?
Just wondering if I've understood you correctly.

4. Actually that would have been a better analogy.
A UAW made Toyota is preferable (contributes more to our economy) than a Mexican made Chevrolet.

3. Canada (the government) owns a stake in GM
Being that they are the partial owners, being loyal to their domestic workers (Canadians) doesn't seem all that backwards. Canada (the government) is also bankrolling the CAW pensions at this point, which is awfully generous.

GM isn't a wholly American company, just to look at one of your examples.

5. That is a good point.

I guess the bottom line is the situation is more complex than a sticker on the back of a car would suggest.

The best practice is for manufacturers to produce good for an intended market within that intended market.

So called "American" companies that offshore manufacturing costs have also offshored their consumer market.
