When Judges get choked up prior to the reading of a Verdict: What does he/she know?

When they make their announcement to the parties and observers to try to remain calm during the reading of the verdict, do the judges know what the verdict is in advance? Have they been informed what the verdict is?

I was so touched to hear judge Batten (NJ State Trooper trial) get choked up when he gave a little speech in the courtroom prior to the reading of the verdict about how difficult the trial had been and how he understood how whichever way the verdict went, it would be a traumatic emotional experience for everyone listening.

It was really poignant, but I didn't understand if he knew at that time what the verdict was or not?

Anybody know?

1. usually it goes in a jury trial

Jury foreperson -> Clerk-> Judge (she/he reads it)->Clerk (she/he reads it out loud)
