In the Middle Ages it was said all over Europe that Jews have horns on their heads (that's why they keep their heads covered - to hide the horns), and they have cloven hooves which is why they never go barefoot, to hide the hooves. (In fact, walking barefoot is a sign of mourning in Jewish tradition, and mourning is discouraged except during special periods such as the "shiva" mourning period when a Jew does not wear shoes in his home.) They also said that Jewish men menstruate.

Now we have another piece of news. Jews have tails.

But the use of the term "tails" in connection with circumcision apparently refers to another part of the male anatomy. The statement was by far right Hungarian candidate Krisztina Morvai, who sparked controversy several days ago when she responded to criticism in a letter saying "I would be glad if the so-called proud Hungarian Jews would go back to playing with their tiny little circumcised tail rather than vilifying me." So apparently the attack had a sexual connotation deriding Jewish manhood. The reference to "so-called proud Hungarian Jews" was also evidently an attack on Jewish national loyalty.

Comments about some in a group make sense if it is about some action you disagree with. But too demonize a group with slander and smear shows much more about the speaker then the group they mention. And anytime you say all (any group) are bad, especially by using derogatory imagery, it is so wrong.

There are many mostly good Jewish people, just like their are many mostly bad Jewish people. And that is the same with Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, Atheist, and any other group of people.

That persons statements are just as bad as smearing any group, and shows a bad thought process. If she made comments about specific Jewish people based on their actions, then she would be making comments on things she disagreed with. She instead was showing a mentality that is not right nor healthy for society.

4. That's classy. But the far-right has always thrived on bombastic rhetoric

so I'm not surprised that even one that is supposedly trying to be somewhat respectable to win election would say something like that.

To be honest, I'm not sure it's such a bad thing to see someone speaking out publicly like this. It makes it harder for others, even those without prejudice, to deny that there are intolerant haters in their midst. If sunshine is the best disinfectant, having the crazies lay it all on the line like this might be better than having them bottle it all up inside and keep a facade of normalcy behind which their supporters can hide and claim ignorance of their candidates' true outlook. It also makes it harder for people thinking about voting for such a yahoo to lie to themselves and say "I'm sure she's not *that* bad". Yes everybody, yes she is.

In the Bible the Book of Esther tells of the plot of Haman to exterminate all Jews. It says that the Jews were greatly alarmed but in the capital, Shushan, "The Jews of Shushan were perplexed." They couldn't grasp it. This is ridiculous - surely this isn't for real, they aren't serious about killing us, surely! Anti-Semitism comes in waves. It seems gone and people forget. Then it comes roaring back.

And it doesn't go away by itself. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." Even in the Book of Esther, the king had already agreed to Haman's advice to kill all Jews. When the king changed his mind the decree had already been issued and in those days a decree of the king of Persia was irrevocable, his order inviolate by law. The king actually had to issue a new, separate decree authorizing the Jews to take up arms in defense against the allies of Haman to defeat them on the day set for the extermination.

In Jewish scripture it is said that this generation will be arrogant, brazen and shameless. We can come to think that such brazen hostility will backfire, surely. It will boomerang. Then they start killing people while we're waiting for the "backfire." The guy who recently killed that Jewish girl at Wesleyan said in his journal that he wanted to create a "Jewish Columbine." (Wesleyan has a relatively large Jewish student population for its region and the head of the university is Jewish.) But overall Jews are a very small minority in the world, only around 12 million, which makes for a very easy scapegoat and target.

The word schvantz or schwantz (both German and Yiddish for tail) is used to describe the human male penis. Perhaps the Hungarians use their own word for tail in a similar way. Schvantz totally evokes the image of a penis, while the English word tail does not. It's cultural.

Edited to add: yep, just checked. Farok, the Hungarian word for tail, is also slang for cock. Same as in German and Jewish cultures of Europe. French too. The word is queue. I have nothing to say about right wing bigots but use of the word tail for penis is not in the same vein at all as referring to people having horns and cloven hooves.

...it would have made no sense if she had posted it in English. We don't refer to male apparatus as a "tail." Not sure if you're Jewish, but if you are, and you are of Ashkenazi origin, I'm surprised you never heard the term "schvantz." It's used in Yiddish, as in "yuck, lookit, that old man's schvantz is sticking out of the bottom of his shorts." If you've ever seen Young Frankenstein, there's a joke reference to the impressive size of the monster's "schvantz." Her comments are obscene of course, and extremely crass. The woman was married to a Jew, so perhaps there's some extra bitterness of a personal nature there. As well, she is extremely pro-Palestine in her politics so some of her unfortunate views may be a result of that as well.

Unfortunately, Jobbik got three MEPs into the Europaean parliament, and they had been having negotiations with the BNP about possible collaborations.

They are a minority party, but they're disgusting. And unfortunately there is a certain tradition of antisemitism in Hungary (some of my friends are from Hungarian Jewish families that managed to leave in the 50s).
