3. I just re-read A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY. Ladies and Gentlemen,
I recommend this book.

It's terrific. The funny parts will leave you howling and the sad parts will rip your heart from your chest.

It's better than GARP, at least I thought it was.

Please abandon the house controversy and order this book on-line. You'll be happy to enter the author's world.

An amazing book.

demonstrate the true skill of a novelist.

It just totally works, start to finish.

29. I think The Cider House Rules is one of the best damn books ever.
I read Garp and wasn't all that impressed. The movie was OK but the plot just seemed to be about losing male body parts. Castration fear or something.

I think John Irving's grandfather was a doctor in New England, and he was writing about what he knew about in his past, in Cider House Rules. And the Cider House Rules were of course a metaphor for the laws against abortion at the time. An excellent book.

54. CIDER HOUSE RULES is another great one by Irving.
The sadness in it is almost soul-shredding. But I love it. I thought the film did well also. For some reason I liked Toby McGuire in that role better than he does in SPIDERMAN. I think he'll be remembered for SPIDERMAN, but he got his CIDER HOUSE role lodged into my memory right away.

Great book.

55. My only complaint about Platt's role in SIMON BURCH was
that they didn't give him enough screen time.

He is an outstanding actor and he got the part of Dan/Ben just right. A surgical read, even. Terrific. I would have loved to see a scene with him and John's mother on the train. Something to establish how much he loved her, and why he became a better "father" to John than anyone else.

I'd give the cinematography and the soundtrack top honors for SIMON BURCH, but I'm in love with the novel and think Irving is too skilled to be upstaged by the screenplay.

56. You make a strong statement, but I hear every syllable of it.
It is a hell of a powerful book.

The loneliness of John, whose mother is taken from him, and the clipped destiny of Dan, whom she met on the train and who brings the armadillo...

My god it's a great read. I recommended it to a close associate who HATES fiction and I just INSISTED she read it.

She called me 2 weeks later and said it made her weep like a junky.

13. I'll tell you exactly why people hate that show---it's popular, dammit. That's evil.
Popular shows encourage people to turn on their TVs. Which wastes electricity. Do you realize how many starving children you could feed with all that wasted electricity, if, you know, they were the kind of children who could eat electricity? Or televisions? Or houses?

Edwards is a man who genuinely cares about the poor ..... the DU haters can go to hell ...

19. No it wasn't...
Nothing in Solomon's piece has been refuted?

Has the Edwards camp come out swinging? nope...

In fact isn't this why this misstep is being talked by Edwards supporters more than his other more serious misstep and that's the obscenity of endorsing an end to the Iraq war while declaring his support to start another war with Iran?

Isn't a more important issue that same 'forces' in America which are now being repudiated by the American people have scored a major coup of sorts -- they actually paid off, what people perceive as a moderate American democrat, to endorse 'war with Iran' which is a policy only shared by the most extreme elements of the American Right including the current President whose approval ratings are the lowest in US history?

But if you agree that having a 'modest' squash court and a pool in a 10,000 square foot house sold quietly to folks being investigated by the SEC is no biggie as well.

...then carry on...you got whole year of carrying this guy's can.

35. Ah...no...it's not
1) the story is still basically true

2) the guy wants to end the war in Iraq while at the same time wants to start another one with Iran and your as hard-pressed as anyone to try explain that one...

3) ...and living in a gazillion dollar house might only be as important as the 'cost of a loaf of bread'?

You remember...when one guy knew the price right off the top of his head and the OTHER guy didn't.

WE all knew WHY the OTHER guy didn't know the price of a loaf of bread and we KNEW it wasn't because he was 'smeared' or it was 'ambush journalism!!' -- no matter how many times the OTHER guy's supporters said it was ...

Well, on the county tax roll it was described as 2 bedrooms, but those who have been in it claim there are 3 bedrooms - and one bath! In reality he has a MacMansion in northern Virginia.

25. I got here a little late for the "house" issue, I guess.
Edited on Sun Jan-28-07 01:51 AM by RegimeChange2008
Frankly, I don't see the point in having an excessive sized house, but it does seem hypocritical in light of Edwards' speeches about fighting poverty and the need to get rid of the "Two Americas".

But this is FAR LESS OF AN ISSUE to me right now than Edwards' apparent enthusiasm for the AIPAC/Likud/PNAC agenda's next planned clusterfuck in Iran. That is the MAJOR issue of this campaign (if indeed we can even call it a campaign a full year before the first primary.)

My chosen screen name here, "RegimeChange2008", isn't merely a reference to kicking the Bush and the Dick out of our lives. It means that this insane, genocidal, imperialist, fascist foreign policy must end, and I absolutely will not tolerate it under the name of the Democratic Party.

51. My take on this is...
...what part of an attorney having a big house is shocking????

...what part of a politician being a hypocrite is unexpected???

I honestly don't expect any more or less from John Edwards as I do anyone else. What I'd like to see are the threads applauding someone in politics who had SHITLOADS of money, yet just gave it away, and lives a humble existence.

Don't see many threads like that around here...

50. It looks like 20% of DU cares about it. Thats no small chunk.
That probably equates to 20% of Democrats in general. It matters enough that the Edwards campaign contacted Daily KOS to tell everyone how green there mega mansion is. So what if they cut down 48,000 trees to build it. It's created quite a fuss here on DU for two days. You can bet John Edwards is now wishing he hadn't built it. In a close election with 20% of Democrats seeing it as an issue, this house thing could actually end his campaign.

52. JMHO but I think DU isn't representative of Dems at large
I think DU'ers are more tuned in and maybe more extreme in their viewpoints than Dems in the non-internet chatroom world.

I also beleive that DU attracts a fair number of paid GOP operatives whose job is to "Divide and Conquer"

That is, to set Dems against each other by posting inflammatory stuff that later turns out not to be as inflammatory or important as it first seemed to be. We saw a lot of that happening during primary and general in '04. . .
