Does anyone know of a legitimate Libertarian foundation
to whom those so inclined might send memorial donations?

No crazies please; I want serious pragmatic sane Libertarian advocacy.

2. "Serious pragmatic sane Libertarian advocacy"? Sorry, can't help you.

There is nothing sane or pragmatic about Libertarianism. It all sounds good superficially -- everybody stays out of everybody else's shit and just acts rationally in their own self-interest and everything will be fine. But IRL it doesn't work that way, which the recent collapse of Alan Greenspan's Randian economy just demonstrated so dramatically. Libertarianism is just a way of saying you're in it for yourself and to hell with everybody else while seeming somewhat respectable.

It will be good for you.

13. Sorry for your loss, Patrice....
Does the donation have to be political?

Isn't there a scholarship fund or
something you can donate to?

Libertarians aren't much for
charities or the common good,
I'm afraid....

18. I decided to go with The Heifer Project.
He was a corporate attorney and his mother was public relations for the Chamber of Commerce in her time.

I think The Heifer Project is appropriate.

All the best Libertarians are Linux consultants, right? :bounce:

6. That depends on what you mean by "serious", "pragmatic", and "sane",...
Edited on Fri Jun-05-09 09:28 AM by JHB
...or for that matter, "libertarian".

As a self-described left-libertarian, none come immediatly to mind. "Libertarians" tend to call me a socialist (not so, but I'm sure you know the type that acts that way), while progressives sometimes give me the hairy eyeball for being on the "wrong" side of this or that issue.

You may find it easier break up the donation among several groups who worked for narrower goals supported by the person you want to memorialize.

Or donate it to low-level charities: food pantries, local volunteer groups, etc. One where everything they get goes to giving people help, and not to paying executives and fundraisers and such.

9. There is an Ayn Rand think tank out there somewhere.
Thom Hartmann has their representatives on his radio program frequently, but I don't remember the exact name. I'm sure if you Google Ayn Rand you will find it.

10. No such thing.

Ain't nothing legitimate about libertarianism, a made-up, self-serving pseudo-philosophy whose sole purpose was to give some sort of legitimacy to capitalism. Without continual cash infusions from wealthy patrons and outfits like NAM it would never have gained any traction whatsoever.

12. Would a libertarian give money to someone elses foundation?
Pick yourself up by your bootstraps and make your own foundation. What's this sucking off the teet of socialism and collectively forming some type of foundation based on other peoples collective funds?

14. Well it depends.
First my condolences about your loss.

If you want "pure" libertarian groups they likely will be ones not popular with DU.

The Cato Institute would be the largest and most well known.

If you don't want to do that you could support a group that has a smaller niche but is in alignment with some of libertarian policies.

Groups like:
Electronic Freedom Foundation
ACLU

16. Why not offer the memorial donation(s) to...
anyone who is willing to advocate libertarianism here in General Discussion on DU? For example, until the money runs out, you can offer one dollar for each serious, pragmatic, sane Original Post that advocates libertarianism, and 25 cents for each serious, pragmatic, sane reply that defends and/or advocates libertarianism.

Of course, you shouldn't have to go looking for the posts, so you can require a PM with hyperlinks to be sent to you by anyone who wants you to make the judgments of seriousness, pragmatism, and sanity.
