Elizabeth Edwards to open NC furniture store
Elizabeth Edwards is planning to open a furniture store near her North Carolina home.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that the wife of former presidential candidate and senator John Edwards has leased space in downtown Chapel Hill. The Edwards live outside the town.

Elizabeth Edwards was recently on a book tour for her memoir "Resilience," which tells of her battle with incurable breast cancer and her discovery last year that her husband had been having an affair. She had talked during the tour about buying furniture for the planned store.

Edwards plans to open the store in October. It will be called Red Window and town officials said it would be similar to a charity store Edwards' mother managed when she lived in Japan.

11. I Will Certainly Make A Point Of Stopping By When I'm In The Area To SAy Hello To Both of Them
They're good people! Even good people can have a turn that goes awry. Best wishes to Elizabeth and John in whatever either one cares to do. All the assholes need to get off their case!

14. She's opening up a small business and you say she's not thinking straight?
I say she is moving on. I'm proud of her.

5. I thought she was working at the Center for American Progress on Healthcare
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 10:05 PM by karynnj
She's still listed as a "fellow" http://www.americanprogress.org/aboutus/staff

I wonder if this is an investment that she will have others run or whether she has simply decided that this is something she would enjoy doing. If so, good luck to her finding some happiness doing this. It clearly is a simpler life.

7. That was my first thought, about her working for the Center
for American Progress. Perhaps with advancements in technology, she can do both?

8. I thought her job at CAP was making speeches
promoting healthcare. I think managing a store would take substantial time. I would imagine that it would be tough doing two jobs, raising 2 yong kids, and dealing with cancer.

12. Maybe just because she wants to
If I had a terminal disease and had the money to do what I wanted to do, I would probably do something similar. This comes under the category of making a difference in people's lives (charity).

She can also remain close to home and have other people run the shop when necessary.

I for one wish her all the best in her endeavors.

15. It sys the store is modelled after a charity store her mother ran, but
it is ambiguous as to whether this store will be a charity.

The whole thing makes a lot more sense if it is. It may also be that her mom's store was a pleasant memory for her and may have been something that was a source of pride and happiness for her mom. Considering that to Elizabeth the last 4 years could seem like she has been cast as a female Job - where she has lost much of what was most important to her - her health, her marriage, and her expectation of being near the center of power in a Democratic administration - something that echoes something comforting from childhood would have its attractions. (yes, I know evoking Job is (thankfully) always overstatement.)

20. Whatever it is to be, and for whatever reason she is doing it...I wish her well
I think many of us here admire her and wish her all the best.
Let's just leave it at that.

16. "Red Window"?
Maybe it's to keep John Edwards from straying to the "Red" Light district?
