Priest invites parishioners to bring guns to church to celebrate Independence Day

An American pastor has invited his parishioners to bring their guns to church to celebrate America's Independence Day, in a show of support for the right to bear arms.

By Leonard Doyle in Washington
Published: 1:05AM BST 05 Jun 2009

A former US Marine, Pastor Ken Pagano of New Bethel Church of Louisville, Kentucky said the church would celebrate the Fourth of July and "our rights as Americans".

Rev Pagano said he wanted responsible handgun owners to attend this service openly wearing their sidearm, on 27 June, the Saturday preceding Independence Day. The move would be symbolic, however: the firearms must be unloaded and in a secure holster. The priest said he would also invite gun shop owners to attend the service in order to tell about their services.

There would be patriotic music along with a presentation about the right of Americans to own firearms, including military-style automatic machine guns. Some gun advocates fear the Obama administration wants to ban the sale of automatic weapons.

Rev Pagano said guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors. Recent church shootings make it necessary to promote safe gun ownership he said.

2. WTF?
I'd much prefer a display of the First Lady's right to well... bare arms than this. That's more disarming than any gun I know.

But still... this is crazy - guns in church? No no no.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition
- Artist: Kay Kyser and His Orchestra
- words and music by Frank Loesser

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

Praise the Lord and swing into position
Can't afford to be a politician
Praise the Lord, we're all between perdition
And the deep blue sea

Yes the sky pilot said it
Ya gotta give him credit
For a sonofagun of a gunner was he

Shouting Praise the Lord, we're on a mighty mission
All aboard, we ain't a-goin' fishin'
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

<instrumental interlude>

Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord (Praise the Lord) and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free

37. A shoot out in the church also could have killed some of those kids who witnessed the murder
I don't buy the armed citizens can prevent a murder argument. The bad guy has the element of surprise in his favor. I see even more innocents getting hurt or killed if there are more guns on the scene.

13. OK, I like guns as much as the next guy...
and I have no problem with concealed carry in a church, but if I was the church going type I sure as hell wouldn't want to sit through a sales pitch.

"The priest said he would also invite gun shop owners to attend the service in order to tell about their services."

That's the real WTF part of this story.

29. Cherry pick for you own personal justification much?
Edited on Fri Jun-05-09 09:27 AM by YOY
:eyes:

Because I think your interpretation seems to be rock solid in your opinion when the subject matter (biblical scripture) at hand is extremely subject to ANY meaning that one wants to pull from hit.

So "live by the sword..." was about mercenaries. Why would mercenaries come up after one of Jesus's followers defended him using force? Who the hell was talking about mercenaries? Jesus was a pacifist for the most part. Quoting scripture is cute and all but you have to know the general story going on at the time the quote happened. You know, the other quotes around the quote you use.

("...Give to Caesar what is Caesar's." you left out the second part "Give to God what is Gods." Providing that God exists and is omnipotent and incognizant ruler of the universe: What isn't God's? If it's God's then it isn't Cesar's. One could justify a freaking theological state with that kind of quote. It's kind of a cryptic statement. As are many things in the bible.

But personally I couldn't give a lesser shit what was said in a book written 2000 years ago loaded with non-demonstrable fact and cherry picked for whatever one's personal goals are.

We've got a second amendment. Fuck the bible. We don't live in Jesusland and the founding fathers were not evangelical Christians.

33. what example do christians have?
Jesus forbade Peter when he wanted to attack the Roman soldiers who came to arrest Jesus.

the most important message that is attributed to Jesus (by people writing at least 100 years after his death, who had no direct knowledge of any event and who relied upon illiterate followers' oral tradition, fwiw) is the Sermon on the Mount.

What did Jesus say? Blessed are the peace makers.

Bless those who curse you.

Do not resist evil. Turn the other cheek.

The four gospels tell four very different stories, in fact, about Jesus. They claim different geneologies. They contradict one another.

that's because the bible is not a literal translation of anything Jesus said and the gospel writers changed their emphasis on the legend of Jesus to fit their own prejudices.

Perfect for simple minds warping context. "Yeah...screw the back story...this one means X 'cause I need it to!!!"

Personally it's not important in my life...I just think it hilarious when someone takes a single line quote to support the most non-jesusy things...

26. In many states people carry firearms in churches...
and they're concealed and LOADED.

I have to admit that if I went to church (which would be a miracle in itself) I would carry a concealed revolver.

You just never know. The person you sit beside in church may just be "packing heat".

43. What exactly is "insane" about it?

Having local gun shop owners tell them about their services would mean things like gun safety classes, gun safes for purchase, ranges for practicing, proper gun maintenance, you know, all those things most people wish gun owners did more of.
