Rush and Newt Are Winning
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 04:24 PM by Mr. Ected
Washington Post
E.J. Dionne Jr.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/03/AR2009060303239_pf.html

A media environment that tilts to the right is obscuring what President Obama stands for and closing off political options that should be part of the public discussion.

<snip>

By dragging the media to the right, Rush and Newt are winning.

On edit: I've emasculated this thread and hope that all are pleased.

Please read kpete's prior and much more interesting post.

4. "If you doubt that there is a conservative inclination in the media"
What living breathing thinking person could possibly doubt that? The war is already lost if we have to continue to argue this point at all.

6. I wonder how the M$M ratings are doing
I know these media megacorps are so diversified they don't really have to worry about revenue from their propaganda talking head shows and 'news' programs, but I'm curious.

Nobody wants to hear this crap. The Reagan Revolution is dead. People want change.

Is anyone tuning in?

8. the republicans have mapped out their strategy and media outreach
for forty years -- yet democrats keep acting like what they're doing -- gingrich, limbaugh -- like it's new.

you dish it back -- you go ahead of them and attack the shit out of them -- you kick them when they're down -- you show no mercy -- because they have none.

11. Obamas flip-flops on Iraq war, Guantanamo, enrgy, etc are helping the cause!
'Reaching Across the Aisle' has become synonamous with APPEASEMENT! Never worked before in recorded history, won't work now! Simply feeds the fires of the likes of Cheney, Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld, and GEITHNER!

16. He's not totally wrong
Every time Limbaugh or Gingrich blow (or pick) their noses, everyone (including DU) takes note of every
detail right up to what color kleenex they use.

If Obama, or Russ Feingold, or even Keith Olbermann say anything of import, it may get mentioned on blogs
like ours, but the chances of it getting noticed by Wolf Blitzer or Candy Crowley are as good as zero. If
Obama were to grant Blitzer or Crowley an exclusive interview, they'd fawn all over him, of course, but when
that's not the case, "the most boring political team on television" is also the most predictable political
team on television. I don't count Fox as a "political" team so much as a "politicized" team--they are propaganda,
and take little effort to disguise it. CNN claims to be a news channel, even though their efforts at convincing
thinking people of their claim are lukewarm at best.

As long as right wing money controls most of our electronic media, that's the way it will stay.

Whether or not it means Gingrich and Limbaugh are winning or not is another question. In the old East Germany
and Soviet Union, the media was blatantly political and party-controlled. Still, at the end, the majority of
the people in both countries didn't believe much of what was reported beyond the sports scores of the previous day.

Limbaugh and Gingrich are out there because moneyed interests that have the cash to pay for it WANT them out
there, and like in East Germany and the Soviet Union, there will be a hard core that will believe whatever
they say, even if they say the earth is cubical, and pigs have pilot's licenses. But they didn't "win" then
and they aren't "winning" now. Like Miguel de Unamuno said in the face of the Spanish fascists so long ago:
"Vencerán, pero no convencerán." In the case of the American right, "ya han vencido," but that, like the Spanish
fascist era, is in the past. Limbaugh and Gingrich are hype, not out there due to raw talent or charisma. Milli
Vanilli, not Bonnie Raitt (or even Susan Boyle).

17. That's not what it looks like to me, and I'm not sure you are employing logic or reason in
arriving at your conclusions, based on today's headlines and the mockery both have made of themselves over the past 72 hours or so.

18. Yes, But the Media Has Given Them All the Rope They Need
To either hang themselves, as they've done this week, or to frame each and every argument for the gullible American public, as they've done...well...for a long, long time.

It's not a surprise to me that they constantly step in their own poo poo.

But even then, even in the midst of mindless inconsistency and cartoonish hyperbole...the media doesn't challenge them.

And neither do our Democratic leaders.

A dangerous concoction.
