Nevada Has Domestic Partnerships!
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 11:30 AM by ccharles000
Well that was quick! Just a few hours after the Nevada Senate overrode Governor Gibbon's veto of the domestic partnership bill, the Assembly followed suit. Nevada now has full-fledged domestic partnerships! Both chambers were able to wrangle the exact number of votes needed for the veto override, 14-7 in the Senate and 28-14 in the Assembly.
The DP law takes effect on October 1, 2009.

Nevada is the 17th state to recognize the relationships of same-sex couples.

According to The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, Assembly members voting for override include: Marilyn Kirkpatrick; Peggy Pierce; Marilyn Dondero Loop; Harvey Munford; Morse Arberry; Barbara Buckley; Tick Segerblom; Joseph Hogan; Ruben Kihuen; James Ohrenschall; Ellen Koivisto; Kathy McClain; John Oceguera; Kelvin Atkinson; Mark Manendo; Jerry Claborn; Ellen Spiegel; David Bobzien; Sheila Leslie; April Mastroluca; Debbie Smith; Bernie Anderson; William Horne; Ed Goedhart; Marcus Conklin; Bonnie Parnell; Paul Aizley and Harry Mortenson.

Senators voting yesterday for the override included: Steven A. Horsford; David R. Parks; Mike McGinness; Dennis Nolan; Bob Coffin; Maggie Carlton; Michael A. Schneider; Valerie Wiener; Dean A. Rhoads; Shirley A. Breeden; Bernice Mathews; Joyce Woodhouse; Allison Copening; and Randolph J. Townsend.

14. Here's the Assembly members who
changed their vote:
Marilyn Kirkpatrick C-North Las Vegas, and Jerry Claborn D-Las Vegas. Claborn was absent for the original vote (maybe he was the one in hospital?) and Kirkpatrick previously voted against.

Today's R-J doesn't give details of who changed their mind on the Senate vote; it's probably in yesterday's newspaper which I can't find right now.

Apparently it was tight right up till the last minute.

2. Good News!
Perhaps the time is coming when those can be converted to marriages. The momentum is growing.

4. Eventually the word "marriage" will replace all these idiotic euphemisms.
Bigots seem to be more worried about the damn word than the legal rights conferred.

7. I agree 100%. It has now become inevitable, and the
6 states where same-sex marriage is legal are the vanguard. The momentum should build quickly.

18. Be sure to write your reps who are on this list
I'm guilty or more complaint than praise myself, but it really needs to be done.
