Summer is here...you can help save lives...FIND OUT HOW and why you are NEEDED

Here is a list of who can and can not donate

http://www.bloodbook.com/donr-requir.html

The United States of America is one of the most charitably-inclined countries in the world, with huge amounts of money donated every year to many worthy causes. However, there is one vital need in every community in the US that is always in short supply because it requires time rather than money to give something that can not be bought or made.

18. You Are SO RIGHT. Seriously, Haven't We HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH THE GAYS???
Edited on Thu May-28-09 11:37 PM by Toasterlad
Jesus Christ, we get it...you're second class citizens who are denied thousands of rights the rest of us have, for absolutely no reason... and yet no one's doing anything about it. You're even forced to lie about who you are if you want to commit a truly humanitarian act and donate blood to maybe keep some craven, asshole bigot alive! Does that mean we HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT NIGHT AND DAY, FOREVER??? Some of us would just rather live our privledged lives without having to hear about how shitty you have it, you know? Get down off the cross, already! Fuck!

(wondering how fast this will be deleted because some alert-happy clown can't recognize sarcasm without a stupid smilie.)

16. This one is a BIG WTF moment for me.
I hadn't read that before.

But then, I did visit France for a couple weeks so I'm "deferred indefinitely" whatever the hell that means.

8. AND....
consider asking about an Apheresis donation, which carries a lot of additional bebefits to patients. It takes much longer, but it's worth it.

13. Here's a link
http://www.givelife2.org/donor/apheresis.asp

the last time I did double red cells, the time before I got a call to do platelets. It's very satisfying as well because often you are donating for a specific and pressing need. Cancer and immune deficient patients benefit a whole lot.

14. Basically you donate your plasma and get the red and white cells back..
I do this twice a week most weeks.. Actual time on the machine is about an hour and total time from walking in to walking out is about an hour and a half.

15. Plasma is one of your options
they can get just about any component of your blood they need.

Plus you get extra cookies......win-win!

17. You're right..
I'm familiar with the plasma extraction but the other components can be extracted also..

But you can donate plasma much more often than most of the other components.

This is the machine they use where I donate.

12. O Negative and they won't take my blood
I had jaundice in 1943, and again in 1947. Neither illness was ever diagnosed as anything but "yellow jaundice". (In 1943 I had every symptom that I now regognize as mono.) No matter, the Red Cross says no. I even paid $90 for a test to prove I didn't have Hepatitis and they still turn me down. My new doctor says if I can find the report she'll sign a waiver so I can give blood. I hate it when I hear them beg for O Negative blood.
