9. here......soon
On June 1, the Minnesota Supreme Court will hear the case of Sen. Norm Coleman versus erstwhile latenight comedian Al Franken, a case which the voters of Minnesota thought they had decided in November.

A three-judge panel has ruled that Franken, the Democrat, beat Coleman, the Republican, by 312 votes -- winning "the highest number of votes legally cast.''

12. Hopefully some time soon........
the sooner the better, I respect Franken for not just giving up the election though. I'm willing to bet anyone else would have probably just said "fuck it" and let the republicans steal another one.

13. Oral argument is June 1
the supreme court has acted quickly, but I think maybe by 3rd week of June is most realistic.

20. I have been told ther is no precedent in state law to call for a new election
Besides, the state can't afford it and, given that even voters who identify as Republicans want Norm to give it up, I'd don't think former Senator Weasel would want to face the voters.

25. People who know much more about the law than I have said they
expect the U.S. Supreme Court to refuse to hear the case if Coleman goes that route as. It is also possible that the State Supreme Court will order the governor to issue an election certificate, or at the very least, a provisional certificate.

27. No provision in Minnesota for a new election.
What there is is exactly what's happening. The SCOMN is the end of the process under Minnesota law. Once they rule, Dim Polenta is bound to sign the certificate. Even if it is appealed to federal court, Polenta must sign the certificate, since he is not a federal official.

If he does not, he could be held in contempt of the SCOMN. He's stupid, but not that stupid.

15. Wow - Al Franken is OBVIOUSLY a serious threat to "the powers that be"
Otherwise "they" wouldn't care if Al was 'seated' or not.....

The powerful "creeptoids" want to hang on the the 'rule of law' as some sort of legitimacy. It's all very, very twisted this.....

26. Not really.
While an obvious improvement over Coleman, Franken is no Wellstone and, unless he suprises us, will be more like Amy Klobuchar (who is rumored to be flirting with the Blue Dogs). There was a truly progressive candidate running for the DFL endorsement but he just couldn't match Franken's fund raising.

The Republicans are just being obstructionist about this because that's what they do.

16. After:
The Supreme Court Justice nominee is voted on (or filibustered)
Healthcare legislation is voted on (or filibustered or most likely totally watered down to nothing to prevent a filibuster)
Any other important agenda item that McConnell and his monsters feel the need to destroy comes before the Senate

22. He seems awfully passive about the whole deal
You know if the shoe was on the other foot, coleman would be on every right wing TV show whining about how he was being deprived of the opportunity to serve the citizens of Minnesota, and gaining a lot of sympathy from low information Americans.

Franken on the other hand understands the media, has the law on his side, and yet we never hear a word from him about the unfairness of it all. I'd be pissed. Most people would be pissed. Why isn't Franken pissed? Does he really want to be a Senator? Or is this an indication that he's going to be just another spineless Dem senator?

As of today, 6.44% of Franken's term has elapsed.

He's also being "edujumacated".

Franken can "read" his new "edjumacation" in any way his soul directs him. eom
