As the U.S. escalates its campaign in Afghanistan, President Obama has made it clear that he considers the rights of Afghan women to be secondary to perceived U.S. interests. These would be the same women that the U.S. used as part of their justification for declaring war on Afghanistan in the first place and who are now supposedly liberated. In reality however, the reign of misogynist terror against Afghan women continues and in many respects has gotten worse. The following 2-part interview with Malalai Joya, a member of the Afghan Parliament now living in hiding because of threats on her life, exposes the true damage done by the continuing U.S. presence in Afghanistan.

5. True, when the Soviets took over the Central Asian area,

one of the things they did was implement women's rights laws.

In fact, the indigenous Communists in Afghanistan were trying to improve the lot of women, and the original mujahedin were mostly opposed to that.

Yup, in a bit of misguided Cold War gamesmanship, the U.S. came in on the side of the people who wanted to keep Afghan women illiterate and veiled.

4. It troubles be when progressives, especially those who claim to support women will not name the real

culprit which is islam and the way it is practiced.

6. I am not sure that Islam is any more anti-women than several Christian

denominations. However, the Taliban are exceedingly misogynistic, as are the radical Muslim clerics. That is one of the major tragedies of the Iraq war; we took a secular, educated country and turned it into a Shite, religious, anti-woman oligarchy. That was not an improvement for the female half of the population.
