A Solidarity thread for straights upset by Proposition 8
I'd like everyone here, especially GLBT DU members, that I am angry about the decision to uphold Prop 8. I don't want to be presumptuous, but I thought other people might want to post similar sentiments.

51 years of experience have taught me that there isn't much point in getting upset over things you can't control.

The right of same-sex couples to marry in California has been infringed.

angry.

If you think there is nothing you can do about it, then you are quite wrong. I plan to channel my anger to its fullest potential and end this ridiculous hate for things that are 'different'.

216. IMO, people really didn't know what they were voting for . . .
give it a little time -- this is a liberal nation tha has been taken over by

r-w freaks.

We've had decades of political violence -- now they're taking out leadership

before it can arise -- stolen elections --

In fact, Jimmy Carter made the point that voters can't always understand our

ballots -- that's what he was saying was one of the reasons why our elections

couldn't even be monitored by his organization!

Organized patriarchal religion is going down . . . let's hope!

I'm disappointed that the decision didn't take on the religious aspect of the

support for this Prop!!

My kids grew up to be liberal democrats. When my son was married last October, 10 days before the election, they included a message of opposition to prop H8 at the end of the ceremony. I was proud of him for doing that.

And I'm going to rant right in this thread, if you beg my pardon. I'm sick of gays being treated like dogs. I'm sick of human beings being treated like shit. I'm sick of bigots. I'm sick of religion. I'm sick of a group of human beings smugly and arrogantly trampling on the rights of other human beings because of their own fears and prejudices. I'm sick of Republicans. I'm sick of homophobes and racists. Fuck them. This cannot stand. I don't want to live on a planet that fucks with people so casually. "Oh, sorry. You can't marry. You can't have the chance of having a family because you are somehow beneath being worthy of participating in our sacred rites." This is separate drinking fountains all over again. It is so clearly, obviously and fundamentally wrong that I can't understand anyone who would even think it could possibly be right.

29. In solidarity...
I am angry that a slim majority of voters, and then a misguided court, have all acted to abridge the natural and inalienable right of citizens to love whom they choose, and be treated equally under the law.

I am baffled that this California Court should move itself toward irrelevance by deciding that the ballot initiative is an appropriate manner by which such natural rights might be denied. If courts cannot be the final arbiter to protect the rights of a minority against the tyranny of a majority, then who can?

I stand in solidarity with all those trying to live as free souls in an ever-more-constrained world.

AFAIC, the GLBT's will be among the first as well.

36. My brother's marriage, my sister's marriage, have no effect on my marriage
I do not like my brother's mate. I do not like his mate's values or proclivities. It does not affect my marriage other than I am unlikely to invite them to holiday supper because the mate is a pushy, obnoxious person who thinks their own opinions are the only thing of value.

I ADORE my sister's mate. Kind, thoughtful, generous, invigorating, devoted to improving life for everyone. It does not affect my marriage other than we can enjoy couples activities. But, this is my sister's fourth state recognized mate, so one may wonder if my sister respects the institution of marriage LOL. Still, she keeps signing up, so she must value the institution. And this marriage has lasted a very long time so she finally chose wisely.

It DOESN'T AFFECT MY MARRIAGE that one sibling is married to a man and the other is married to a woman. And it shouldn't matter to anyone else which sibling is married to the woman and which to the man. All that matters is that those couples have legal rights and protections, state sanctioned and state protected.

I want the same rights and protections for ALL Americans.

It broke our hearts today, but really, all it meant was that the Intuitive Process is allowed. Now we get to work and put THAT little legal tidbit to work for all our GLBT 'siblings'. We ARE family and we need to make sure we work for true equality.

I am no longer heart broken. I am damned determined to help get gay marriage just as legal as any other marriage between consenting adults.

Roll up your sleeves and open up your checkbooks, DU. We have been handed a challenge by the California Supreme Court. Meet the challenge!

Equality!

There must be some way that we can fight the bigots with them, hardly a fair fight mind you with so many holy haters crossing state lines against them.

I live in NYS what can I do?
It would be helpful if someone can help organize us the way the out of state holy haters were organized against them. I still have to believe decent americans outnumber the bigots. Those brain dead, fairy tale believing, raised from birth to hate fuckers can not possibly be representative of this nation as a whole.

Any ideas? How can we help our fellow americans gain some american rights?

Since I'm not a lawyer I can't voice an informed opinion on whether this was a good decision from a legal standpoint but I can assert without qualification that the 52% of voters who voted in favor of Prop. 8 were wrong -- every last one of them.

This is a sad day for civil rights and for humanity -unfortunately the latest in many sad days we have had recently on the issue of GLBT rights. In this supposedly "enlightened" age, it is apparently still acceptable to discriminate against and deny rights to a minority. The state that elected Earl Warren Governor more than 60 years ago has not lived up to his legacy.

This is not just a loss for the GLBT community. It is a gratituous insult to the concepts of equality, humanity, compassion and justice that we supposedly cherish as a society that belongs to the free world

Once again prejudice has won. But I do believe in the quote from Dr King that I put in my sig line. I have hope for the future even if I have deep disillusionment with this aspect of the present. We shall overcome

Not surprised. I know people think of California as a 'liberal' state but when you live in any one of the red areas(I live in Bakersfield area)it has never seemed liberal to me.

Even though I'm not surprised I'm just monumentally angry, sick, disgusted-I wish our collective anger could somehow itself make all the fucking idiot bigots realize just how sick their stupid homophobic mindset is. Having friends and people I love having to lead secret lives for the most part is just plain hideous all around.

Forget about the bullshit about spreading democracy around the world when we ain't got it here. We are all diminished by this incredible injustice.

104. We cannot be a nation of people who can vote to take away any
rights from any group. That is the issue here. The Constitution of the United States of America was written, in part, to protect minority groups from the rule of the majority! The tyranny of majority, no matter how frammed, rationalized, argued or defended can never be allowed to attack moniorities simply for being a member of that minority. In this instance the Supreme Court of the state of California said the majority now has the right to vote away the rights of any minority groups where they can raise funds, put a proposition on the ballot and spend millions into scaring them about any minority group - who is next! How about old people who take up space in badly needed housing, hospitals, and assisted living centers just as the baby boomers are reaching senior citizen ship, and costing us millions in the last two years of their lives driving up our health insurance costs and rates. Let's vote for euthanasia of seniors who are clearly within two years of their inevitable deaths. Then let's go after homeless people, the mentally ill, the prison populations - god can't let them out on the streets threatening our children - can we? How about fat people - similar reasons as old people? Talk about running up health care costs and taking up more than their share of seats on airplanes and movie theaters. I am uncomfortable with fat people, you never know what they are gonna do. They might sit on me or my child and suffocate them, like that fat woman did with that child who was sat on by a fat security guard in taxes and suffocated the child. Who is next? Who? Maybe, you reading this? Wasting your employer's time reading the internet on company time! Let's put a proposition on the ballot to fire everyone doing that - wasting time, taking up a job that someone else could do better and driving up the costs of goods and services!

Let's turn our discomfort of those who we are not comfortable with and target them, their a member of some minority group anyway and defenseless. The will of the majority vote cannot be abridged - so sayeth the Supreme Court of the United States of America!

Shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame!

As a prominent humorist once said: "Gays and Lesbian couples should have the same right to commit to making each others lives miserable like we straght folks do."

A stupid decision.

California really has to seriously consder reforming the way they change their constitution.

Here in Wisconsin, In order to amend the constitution, the proposal has to pass two consecutive sessions of the legislature before going to the ballot.

112. Sad day for Human Rights.
It could have been an example, and it could have lead to other examples of equal treatments of humans.

Unfortunately, it was not. I have the rainbow flag in my sigline for years now, a small gesture of trying to show my full support of my sisters and brothers of the GLBT "community." I put community in quotes because it always sounded to me like we're talking about a little town somewhere, and we're not. We're part of the "human community," no exception, no differences.

The struggle goes on.

If it's supposed to be based on love, then the legal system has no business telling people whom they can love; and if it's supposed to be based in law, then how can the law say "You can enter into a legally binding contract with this adult citizen but not that one"? It makes no sense whatsoever.

147. Im upset by Prop 8
but I have to say, I was not surprised by the result. I'm much more troubled by a vote of the people that moves to remove rights from others, than I am by a court decision to abide by the results of that election, no matter how ugly they are.

Does this open the door for majorities to take away the rights of other disfavored minorities? That door was always open if a particular minority was not officially protected. In my lifetime, that protection has been afforded at the national level either by Congress (with the President signing the legislation, or having his veto overridden), or by the Supreme Court applying the standards that a clear majority of the states have demonstrated constitute justice. Sadly, we live in a country where 60% of the state constitutions have their version of Prop 8, waiting for the Supreme Court to overturn a law that those places have adopted just within the last dozen years may be futile.

This battle needs to be won in the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans, only that will produce a lasting justice for all.

160. A real bummer
California, it's time to have another Proposition that supports equal marriage rights for all adults.

This is, perhaps, the only way to overturn the CA Supreme Court's insane decision.

Although I live in Illinois, if there is such a proposition, I will contribute funds to this civil rights struggle.

Never, ever give up.

Checking in, but I don't blame the court specifically, I'm still pissed off that Prop 8 was possible in the first place, by simple majority. And I'm pissed off at that majority that passed it.

How this is possible in the face of "nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." is still beyond me.

I heard someone on Thom Hartmann? Ed Schulz? say that if the voters had gone the other way in the election, the court would have ruled differently. They were supposedly out to create the least amount of uproar. If that's true, that's REALLY not justice.

193. I am a straight San Diego, California male and am upset about Proposition H8
I don't know whether to be more upset about the ruling today or the fact that it was passed in the first place back in November.

I am angry about the religious people who feel, based on their religious beliefs, that it is their damned business to decide that a certain group of people are to be denied certain rights that other people enjoy. There were a lot of Yes on 8 signs on people's yards in my neighborhood, and sometimes not on anybody's property, right before the November election. I did not touch any of the signs on anybody's property, but I trashed a few signs which were along a sidewalk and not on anybody's property.

I am pretty certain, though, that the homophobic bigots who support Proposition H8 are on the wrong side of history, just like those who opposed civil rights were on the wrong side of history.

It undermines the whole idea of a constitution.

Also, the idea that a simple majority can affect the rights of a minority is simply Un-American. Civil rights can't be a matter of rule by a simple majority. Popular groups don't need protection and, under this precedent, unpopular groups have no protection.

227. This one just got personal for me
Earlier this month, a presenter at a conference I attended mentioned that she desired to one day be married on Maui. As it turns out, the current candidate is female. Sadly, this would not be possible at present, because the same unholy alliance behind Prop H8 rammed a similar amendment through out here over a decade ago. And then I had to wake up the next damn morning to find that the Keystone Kops in our state senate couldn't even get civil unions done! I almost kicked the newspaper rack over. :grr: My new friend is only 28, so there's still time -- but who the hell are those bozos to tell her she can't be married here, because it doesn't say "M" on the right of her partner's driver license?!

Straight but not narrow,
K-A

I'm incredibly angry. There should be no rest until equal rights are for EVERYONE. No backing and filling, hemming and hawing. This isn't rocket science. I don't feel like my rights are worth a fucking plugged nickel with this shit anyway. If they can do it to gay people, they can do it to anyone!! :(

233. They made a (mostly) legally defensible decision that is also politically savvy.
First, before anyone else attacks the California Supreme Court further, read the decision. Yes, I know it is 185 pages long, but the initial summary is only 13 pages, so at least read that much.

The opinion is at:
http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions/documents/S168047.PDF

Second, let's keep in mind that this is the same Court that struck down the California law defining marriage as strictly heterosexual last year. They are not monsters or bigots. THIS decision is about the constitutionality of Prop 8, which is a constitutional amendment passed through clearly described constitutional procedures. They may strike us as silly procedures, but that is the way the California constitution is written. The ruling is not about the merits of gay marriage, but about whether the people of the state of California have the right to amend their constitution.

Third, had the Court struck down Prop 8, we would have witnessed a huge backlash against the Courts putting themselves above the democratic process. What can and should happen now is that Prop 8 will get overturned by the people themselves in another ballot initiative.

Lest anyone think that I actually like the decision, let me be clear that I do not. But let's start now to channel our energy into overturning Prop 8 rather than attacking the very Justices to whom Prop 8 was drafted to reverse!

SCENARIOS-Which U.S. states may legalize gay marriage next.
The New York State Assembly passed a bill on May 12 to legalize gay marriage but it faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority. Solmonese is optimistic, noting that Governor David Paterson has said he is committed to "full marriage equality in New York State".

A poll released on Tuesday by Siena College showed New Yorkers split 46 percent to 46 percent on whether it should be legalized -- compared with last month's 53-39 approval margin.

Most New York Democrats, young and Jewish voters support Senate passage, the Siena poll found. Most Republicans, older voters, blacks, Protestant and Catholic voters oppose it.
http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN26324189

Fucking morans --->“Today’s decision is a victory for democracy and a victory for the civil rights of clergy, county clerks and Californians across the political spectrum who did not want to be forced by the government to approve of same-sex marriage,” said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, a conservative group that supported Proposition 8.

This will likely be a long, slow, hard slog.

235. and when they came for me, there was no one left to speak up...
Here's how I see it. What business does the government have in any marriage except the legal part, spouse's rights to visit in hospital, who gets property if one dies or they split up, etc.? Either we have separation of church and state, or we don't, and this bs says we don't. We are living in a theocracy in many ways, as someone else said. So even the lame, half-assed "we'll call it a civil union" compromise is crap. As far as the gov. is concerned, a heterosexual marriage is nothing but a civil union. The feelings between two people, and the religious aspect, if any, is nobody else's business.

Bill Maher said it on his latest show, California has thrown out the Constitution, and is now making its rules by special interest groups sending a person with a clipboard to stand in front of your grocery store asking you to sign their petition. The Mormons spent I forget how many millions of dollars on that one, targeting mostly Catholic Latino people. So I see it as a triumph of bigotry but also as honest, hard working, and well meaning religious people mislead by these more seriously evil bigots. Uh oh, I am starting to digress onto a different rant regarding abortion and the "religious" right, but I don't want to hijack this and I do not yet have enough posts to start my own thread. So y'all rock on with your lovely gay selves and hang in there.

My girlfriend and I got scared when we were accosted by a pair of Mormon Missionaries before the election. We refused to take their Yes on 8 crap. They got pissed off because I'm Jewish and she's black. THey then shot their mouths off about the church's real target is to overturn the Loving decision and eliminate interracial marriage. We know that we're the next targets of the Mormon Church. Fuck those bigots!

251. Those who Sow the Wind, Reap the Whirlwind...
Prop. 8 made me more ashamed of my state than anything it had ever done in the past, and this decision, though expected, upsets and angers me. At the same time, I believe that those who thought Prop. 8 was a good idea, the fundies and bigots who imagined that putting an end to gay marriage in CA would put an end to it period, are now realizing that they've reaped the whirlwind.

This is not just because gays, who the Prop. 8 folk assumed would quietly go back to being second class citizens, are angry and willing to boycott and march. This is not just because their friends and families are marching with them, nor because sympathetic straight people are also joining in to fight for their cause. It's because anyone with eyes and a brain in their head is going to realize that if civil rights, equal rights for gays can be voted away so easily, they can be voted away for anyone for any reason.

My interracial marriage was, once upon a time, illegal. I have no doubt, that under the right circumstances, it could be made illegal again if fundies and bigots decided to target it as they've targeted gay marriage. I am not gay, and this doesn't affect my life directly, but it's personal. It's very, very personal. This fight is my fight. If Prop. 8 had not passed, if it had not been upheld today, I'd still be willing to fight, but I might not be ready to go to war. Now I am.

Here comes the whirlwind.

257. Definitely!
Not only is the ruling wrong, it doesn't make any sense! If you aren't married you can't get married - if you are married you still are.

That was WEAK.

I always thought California was more sophisticated than the rest of the country. My God, now Iowa has them beat. (No offense to Iowa, my state would rank about 49 on sophistication).

We just need a major turn around in this country, one state at a time doesn't get it. We need a Supreme Court that believes in equality then we might get somewhere. I just stay angry with the retro-neanderthal "religious" organizations pouring their cash over state lines to try to rule the lives of people they will never meet. That is frightening on all levels. That could destroy the rights of many more groups in this country. The cultists need to stay in the state that was set aside for their supremely ignorant asses and live the civilized people in this country the hell alone!
