2. Yes it does
Is a Spainaird hispanic? Then being of portugese descent also means you are hispanic. Not a latino.

3. No, it does not.....Portuguese speak portuguese not spanish
Edited on Tue May-26-09 08:39 AM by hlthe2b
from the portuguesefoundation.org:
--Hispanic is basically an American term, not used in Europe;
--Even people from Spain are not Hispanics; they are Spanish;
--In Portuguese we use the term "Lusófonos" to describe people of Portuguese descent or culture.

in answer to your other question, NO a person from Spain is not hispanic, but Nothern European, (castilian) spanish-speaking...
PS... Brazilians, being descendents of portuguese explorers and settlers are also NOT considered "hispanic" by the US Census Bureau

9. One thing someone from Spain definitely isn't is 'Northern European'
And it would seem that the US Census includes anyone with 'South American origin' in 'Hispanic', so that could potentially include someone who might also describe their origin as 'Brazilian':

Hispanic Origin. Persons of Hispanic origin in this file are determined on the basis of question that asked for self-identification of the person's origin or descent. Respondents are asked to select their origin (Or the origin of some other household member) from a "flash card" listing ethnic origins. Persons of Hispanic origin, in particular, are those who indicated that their origin was Mexican-American, Chicano, Mexican, Mexicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Hispanic.
