An actual conversation with someone "concerned" about Obama's birth certificate.
HIM "Did you get that email I sent you about Obama's birth certificate?"

ME (heavy sigh) Yes.

HIM Do you know why Obama REFUSES to product his birth certificate?

ME Do you really think the state of Illinois would have certified him to run for the Senate without proof of citizenship?

HIM But how do they know it wasn't fake? It was from Hawaii.

ME Hawaii is a state in this country - they have the same birth certificate requirements as everyone else

HIM But I think Obama was born in Kenya - they didn't give him a birth certificate the day he was born, he got it years later.

ME He would still be a US citizen regardless of where he was born.

HIM No he wouldn't, he wasn't born in America

ME Neither was John McCain

HIM But that was during a war.

ME What difference does that make?

HIM because McCain's dad was stationed there in the military.

ME So McCain was born outside the US but his parents are American so he qualifies?

HIM (big smile) THAT'S IT!

ME But Obama's mother is from Kansas.

HIM But his Dad is from Kenya.

ME That's true. But you only need one parent to be American to be an American.

HIM No you don't

ME Yes you do

HIM I think you are wrong

ME So Thomas Jefferson was not an American citizen?

HIM now that's just stupid.

ME He only had one parent born in America. Just like Barack Obama

HIM That can't be true you have to have both parents be American and be born in America.

ME Except for John McCain - because of the War.

HIM - I can't talk to you when you get like this. (flounced off to the kitchen)

Edited on Tue May-19-09 06:17 PM by SoCalDem
or the missing "time" he was supposed to have spent doing that service.. and the fact that in NINE long years, there were no "buddies" who ever showed up to regale us with the stories about when they were "in the guard together"....but republicans found guys from Kerry's past and copies of everything in HIS early years..and none of them thought that a bit odd..

14. They wanted to be concerned, but then Dan Rather lied to the country!
Do you get how that works? Start talking about George Bush's (lack of) military record, and the topic switches to Dan Rather. Talk about who authorized torture, and the topic switches to why is Pelosi lying? Happens everytime. You'd think the Democrats would have come with something like a, I don't know, strategy. We're like Charlie Brown and the football.

36. I am 61 years old & never in my lifetime has a presidential candidate been asked for his birth cert
I'm certain that never in the history of the Republic has a candidate, much less the actual president, been asked to produce his birth certificate. It is bizarre.

I have seen the photo of both the birth cert and the "vital statistics" post in the Honolulu newspaper online. Barack Obama's looks exactly like my children's. My kids were born in Honolulu in 1975 and 1978. Hawai'i is a STATE. My kids are US citizens by virtue of that fact, but even if I had been living overseas at the time of their births they would still be citizens because *I* am a citizen, just like Barack Obama's mother was a citizen.

IIRC the Hawai'i bureau responsible for vital statistics has a policy of not letting random people poke around in their archives. They provide certified copies upon request and for a fee -- when my adult daughter lost her birth cert she had to write to them for a copy and it looked a little different than the one I first received when she was days old. I think the obstetrician's name was left off or something. But it was certified as genuine, and it is. There's no need for the Republican governor of the State of Hawai'i to "seal" anything.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to jump on you in particular, but this non-issue has been thoroughly dealt with long ago. The only reason the Repubs aren't satisfied is because they (a) hate Democrats so much they don't care what kinds of lies they spew, (b) can't stand the cognitive dissonance of having a half-black man as POTUS, and/or (c) can't believe that a chain of islands populated by blissfully miscegenating people from every corner of the Earth (especially Polynesians, Asians, and Haoles) could actually be a State in the Union.

Just consider the source, is all I'm asking.

Hekate

24. so, Hawaii isn't a state--it's some foreign country
when we request a BC, we get a copy of the record. I guess some morons think that's not good enough. So if O's BC isn't good enough then I guess everyone's BC is suspect--right? I mean it's just a copy of the state records.

And, wasn't there a birth announcement in the paper at the time of his birth?

Edited on Tue May-19-09 10:19 PM by Jim Lane
I'm not sure of all these details -- I read some stuff about this when the "issue" first surfaced but haven't paid much attention since, and my memory might be off.

Still, I think that, under current law, someone born in Kenya with one U.S. citizen parent would be a natural-born citizen, but that the law was different when Obama was born. His mother could have conferred U.S. citizenship on a foreign-born child only if she herself had been a citizen for at least five years after turning fourteen, a condition she didn't meet because she was then only eighteen.

Of course, Obama is a natural-born citizen anyway, because he was born in Hawaii and neither of his parents was a foreign diplomat. (A diplomat's kids enjoy diplomatic immunity and therefore aren't subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, which is one of the requirements in the Fourteenth Amendment for natural-born citizenship. Anyone else born in the U.S. is a natural-born citizen regardless of the parents' citizenship or immigration status.)

That's why most of the birthers assert that, for some unexplained reason, Obama's mother (who was not wealthy) flew thousands of miles to deliver her child in Kenya, in presumably inferior medical facilities, and then quickly returned to Hawaii and did the paperwork to fake a U.S. birth. Uh-huh. And big tax cuts for the rich will generate more revenue for the federal government.

26. Citizenship is complicated and has changed since Jeffersons era.
Not trying to argue against you, but the laws for citizenship have changed and I don't know that Jefferson would have been a natural citizen in his circumstance.

But regardless, Obama was born in Hawaii and there is plenty of evidence to prove that. So it doesn't fucking matter.

30. Any person born on U.S. soil (which includes territories) is automatically
an American citizen. Obama was born in Hawaii--it doesn't matter that his father was not an American citizen.

This is the reason so many pregnant Hispanic women will come over the border to deliver; they want their
children to have U.S. citizenship.

38. Ask your friend about Cheney.
Specifically, what state Cheney was from.

If they say Texas, inform them how the VP and Pres. cannot be from the same state. The fact that he claimed Wyoming as his home state is way more of a farce than any claims about Obama's birth certificate.
