(CBS) NEW YORK A former contractor for the city who worked at the Fresh Kills landfill has accused the city of filling potholes with human remains from the World Trade Center, reports CBS station WCBS-TV in New York.

Norman Siegel is representing some of the families of Sept. 11 victims suing to re-open the search for human remains. He's produced a deposition from a contractor who sifted through the remains at the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island.

"They were putting the remains of people who died on Sept. 11 in the potholes on the roadway of Fresh Kills," Siegel said. "This was another example not only of inadequacy but the deliberate indifference of the people running the city."

The city stopped sifting through almost a half million tons of debris after about a year of work. But some family members maintain they stopped work prematurely.

"It's never acceptable because of expediency, time, money or business interests to throw away the remnants of your loved ones," said Sally Regenhard, a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

A city attorney denies that the sifting was incomplete or that remains were mishandled.

"To our knowledge, there is no truth to these claims. The city did everything possible to recover Sept. 11 remains in a caring and thorough manner."

1. The "ashes" of the victims. That is hyperbole of the first order. Nobody knowingly took human ashes and recycled them for filling potholes. They're using the general rubble from the towers. Is this inappropriate use considering that people were lost in those buildings? Sure, but let's not take it to the point of ridiculous. (If Olbermann actually said that, he has really lost a notch in my view.)

2. Air pollution. Put that square in the lap of Bush and his cronies. If you recall, Hillary Clinton fought long and loud for the US EPA to quit declaring that the air was safe when everyone knew it was bullshit.

You can dislike Giuliani all you want, and I won't defend him. But try to find reasons that actually have some relevance to him.

29. Find the charges posted by the NYC firefighters...

I saw an press release The NYC firefighters put out a couple of weeks ago (sorry, didn't save the link...)when Rudy announced he was running. They claim that they were not given enough time to recover all of the bodies of not only the twin tower victims, but over half of the dead and missing firefighters as well. Rudy was more concerned about bulldozing the site to get to the vaults owned by the Bank of Nova Scotia which were full of gold and silver. The rubble was just scooped up, remains and all and taken to Fresh Kills. There was supposed to be more sifting done there, but obviously that wasn't done either (I seem to remember Fresh Kills is owned by...you guessed it, a 'R' oligarch) thus the uproar. This does need more attention, because it shows the callous indifference 'America's Mayor' really has for the real heroes of that day...

not to mention other animals and other rotted organic matter in most every shovel of dirt in the world. When I'm cremated, I'd hope the remains would be put to some use instead of sitting in a dumb urn for...50 years? Until somebody down the line decides to throw it in the landfill.

No, they didn't. Local crews were kept away; the feds came in and scooped everything up without care. The whole clean up effort (and NO investigation) was shoddy. It's despicable.
