Airline mechanics who can't read English
News 8 has recently revealed serious flaws in the way the FAA licenses mechanics who fix planes.

There is evidence of years of problems in testing these mechanics. There is also evidence that hundreds of mechanics with questionable licenses are working on aircraft in Texas.

Now there is evidence of repair facilities hiring low-wage mechanics who can't read English.

Twenty-one people were killed when U.S. Airways Express Flight 5481 crashed in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003. The plane went wildly out of control on takeoff.

One reason for the crash, investigators found, was that mechanics incorrectly connected the cables to some of the plane's control surfaces in the repair shop. The FAA was cited for improper oversight of the repair process.

Wonderful. Co-pilots who have to work in coffee shops to make ends meet and mechanics who can't read English!

1. Yet another vestige of the notorious BushCo legacy.

I'm afraid we will be seeing reminders of The BushCo Reign of Terra for years to come.

People who were good at what they did were forced out of their jobs by others who would

do it for much less pay in all areas of employment.

2. Texas? - The airline I was on last night is based out of Texas
I was almost news last night too. Mechanic error or pilot error, not sure which one.
Also not sure the story the pilot told was accurate.

We did an extremely low fly-by of the airport on landing and circled around before landing. The landing gear had not been lowered, When they are, there is a definite sound it makes.

The pilot claims he was concerned about a flap malfunction warning and that is why he called out the fire trucks and did the fly by. If that is the case, it was a mechanic error and could be attributed to the mechanics, or just wear.

If as I suspect, the pilot waited to long to lower the gear and realized he didn't have time, it was on the pilot.

Either way, it was a little freaking knowing something wasn't right on the jet you are trapped in.

3. I know an airline mechanic
Drinks more than everyone else I know combined. Probably about a fifth a day. Still manages to show up for work sober. I try not to fly. But I especially try to avoid flying on the airline he works for. I don't see anything good coming of that.....

4. I know an airline mechanic who was an excellent employee before he changed careers.
The tales he told me about what others did keeps me (and him) from flying to this day.

This was for a Major airline.
