Happy Malcolm X Day !

In February, 1965, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party held a series of rallies in Jackson. At the time, Martin Luther King, Jr., was incarcerated in Selma. There was tension within the Civil Rights Movement. And on February 4, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee invited Malcolm X to speak to a rally of young people, who were planning a march in Selma.

Some of King’s top aides found the prospect of Malcolm X addressing the young people a bit frightening. Two of them, Rev. Andrew Young and Rev. James Bevel, approached Malcolm with instructions: do not incite the students.

Malcolm responded, "Remember this: nobody puts words in my mouth."

It is known that Malcolm himself approached Coretta Scott King, and assured her that he was not there to cause Martin any problems. He said that his goal was to let the opposition know that if Martin failed, there were other forces, waiting in the wings, fully prepared to take over. Malcolm believed this would make Martin a more acceptable choice to those who opposed freedom and justice for all.

Today, we mark the birthday of Malcolm X – May 19, 1925. At a time when there are tensions within the Democratic Party, we would do well to remember this courageous man ….. and to learn from the lessons he taught.

Peace,
H2O Man

2. Everyone should read his autobiography

Brother Malcolm suffered greatly as a child but when he became a man he used the knowledge he had about how human
nature works to mobilize 100s of thousands of people to rally to his "by any means necessary" and "the ballot or the bullet"
slogans of that era.

3. At an airport a few years ago I saw the author of "The autobiography of Malcom X" and approached him
and told him how much I appreciated his works.

Who was the author of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X?"

answer below.

BTW if you actually read Malcolm X you realize that he is actually a very conservative guy.

Alex Haley was the actual author

The Autobiography of Malcolm X (ISBN 0-345-35068-5) was written by Alex Haley between 1964 and 1965, as told to him through conversations with Malcolm conducted shortly before Malcolm X's death (and with an epilogue after it), and published in 1965. The book was named by Time magazine as one of the ten most important nonfiction books of the 20th century.

Haley stated in the documentary Eyes on the Prize that it was difficult to write the autobiography because Malcolm X was quite averse to talking about himself and preferred instead to talk about the Nation of Islam

15. He lived in my hometown for a couple of years.
For an almost entirely white town, they were awfully proud of him when an actor portraying a teacher of Malcom X's in the movie came to interview some of his former teachers and look around the town.

It still boggles my mind that Mason had a brush with greatness and that it was Malcom X.
