I went to an anti war march in NYC, came back to find an FBI agent who was very interested in some literature I brought back home with me.
He asked questions about one of the other guys in the building (college students) who filed for conscientious objector status to the military. He got his CO, and I wound up in the Army with a FBI file that prevented me from geting a high security clearance, later got me investigated by the Army CID. I got discharged before this came to anything, but evidently I was suspected of any major crimes committed within a 50 mile radius of wherever I was.
I got it once under the FOIA, it was about a page long, much of it blacked out, pretty much nothing.

Technically, you aren't required to speak to them at all. They may make basic threats about "taking this downtown" or some equivalent, but to a great degree it's a threat. Their supervisors aren't all that interested in running through the paperwork to actually do this for some vague report. They'll do some background checking on you, talk to your neighbors, that kinda thing before moving on much.

That said, it can be useful to you to speak to them. Don't let them come in, speak to them on the porch or whatever, even agreeing to meet them somewhere else. And bring along someone, in essence a "witness". It just tends to keep things a bit civil. Also, just answer the questions. Don't try to "make a case" about anything. Where were you, what were you doing there, who were you there with. No lectures about politics or anything. You were there to support, participate, observe, whatever but not anything "confrontational". You weren't there to "fight" or "confront" or "oppose". No constitutional lectures. And avoid answering questions about "what you thought". I had a good time, I felt supportive, I was bored to death, these are relatively safe answers depending upon what happened there. "I got out when it turned ugly" is another basic answer. Nothing judgemental about who was ugly, just that you left. And the final suggestion is usually that you volunteer nothing. They don't ask, don't tell.
