Loyal Bush insider Karen Hughes remembers D.C. days

Karen Hughes, a confidante of George W. Bush, stayed on task in downtown Houston the other day. If she had brilliant or juicy insights about the former president, she didn’t share as she spoke at a sedate luncheon sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Houston.

While she worked for Bush, she also was his personal grammarian. She and Bush had their Webster moments, she said. For example, once Bush made a speech, then turned to her.

“Did I do anything wrong that time?” he asked.

“I hated to tell him, but he said ‘misunderestimate.’ That’s not a word.”

“I did not,” Bush said.

“Yes, you did,” retorted Andy Card, then his chief of staff. “Three times.”
