Poll question: Rummy's "God" memos. You've heard it both ways. Which do you think is true?
On the one hand, some postulate that Rummy's biblical quotes were either the work of a religiously insane subordinate or at the direct orders of Rummy.

On the other hand, some aver these were an attempt to shape the view of but one man, our dimwitted, oafish, (also) religiously insane president.

5. It's two, two, two mints in one!
Wacko dominionist underling comes up with it, Rummy sees it's value in manipulating the boy king, and also in classic Rumsfeldian fashion uses the idea knowing it can be blamed on the underling if it comes to light.

7. Why not both?
I was blown away to see those memo covers posted.

How do such insane or manipulative or more likely both plus pathological individuals end up controlling life and death decisions for massive amount of individuals that just want to be secure and happy with their friends and families and pleasant days and the best means to face the not so pleasant facts of simple life?

The Rumsfield memo covers are every bit as inflammatory as the torture and debasement photos to date.

9. I suggest that they're worse
Torture may be a war crime, but it is all too common.

These memos, from the highest levels of our government, make us appear for all the world like religious extremists bent on annihilating an entire ethnic group.

I hate religious extremism.

12. I suggest your are correct, Sir, They are worse.
As a low count poster, I tend to temper my strong opinions or sit on my fingers.

There is a segment of religious people that believe in Bible prophecy that think a nuclear WWIII is just ducky.

8. Read Robert Draper's article on the subject
http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_9217

The cover sheets were created by Major General Glen Shaffer. Rumsfeld encouraged Shaffer to continue creating them.

It was a cynical, brown-nosing ploy by Rummy to curry favor with Dubya.

13. Machiavelism
Edited on Mon May-18-09 10:09 PM by RandomThoughts
Does not believe in God. It says that religion should be used to control people while leaders ignore it. Actually Machiavelism is almost a definition of person first, and do what every you want without morals. It seems to almost be a religion that is opposite of most other religions.

The thing about it is many people talk about liking the doctrine, and even supporting it. But when you look at it, it is really bad doctrine.

However, many seem to follow it. I think it is a terrible doctrine, and for many gives them a rational to do evil, by putting a name on it.

14. Neither: Christianizing the military...
I find it very hard to believe that Rumsfeld is a believing Christian, even of the fundamentalist apocalypse sort.

What need was there to influence Bush Jr.? He was always an obedient front man for the spook mob that brought him in, and I'm not one of those who think his supposed faith was the defining interest on his decisions. Insofar as he was making any decisions.

There is a lot of Christian cadre in the military, and they are missionary. I find it very easy to believe Rumsfeld hopped on the trend to Christianize the military, as it keeps them following orders obediently and has become central to recruitment. Excellent article about this last month in Harper's, called "Jesus Killed Mohammed."
