Baghdad market just “like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime,”
Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 01:09 PM by RedEarth
...so says Representative Mike Pence, an Indiana Republican who was a member of the McCain delegation.

In my opinion, the three main characteristics of republicans are greed, hatred and being a liar. Mr. Pence sure seems to qualify from the lying standpoint.

....from the NYT........

BAGHDAD, April 2 — A day after members of an American Congressional delegation led by Senator John McCain pointed to their brief visit to Baghdad’s central market as evidence that the new security plan for the city was working, the merchants there were incredulous about the Americans’ conclusions.

“What are they talking about?” Ali Jassim Faiyad, the owner of an electrical appliances shop in the market, said Monday. “The security procedures were abnormal!”

The delegation arrived at the market, which is called Shorja, on Sunday with more than 100 soldiers in armored Humvees — the equivalent of an entire company — and attack helicopters circled overhead, a senior American military official in Baghdad said. The soldiers redirected traffic from the area and restricted access to the Americans, witnesses said, and sharpshooters were posted on the roofs. The congressmen wore bulletproof vests throughout their hourlong visit.

“They paralyzed the market when they came,” Mr. Faiyad said during an interview in his shop on Monday. “This was only for the media.”

He added, “This will not change anything.”

At a news conference shortly after their outing, Mr. McCain, an Arizona Republican, and his three Congressional colleagues described Shorja as a safe, bustling place full of hopeful and warmly welcoming Iraqis — “like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime,” offered Representative Mike Pence, an Indiana Republican who was a member of the delegation.

5. Wow, remind me not to go to Indiana
Indiana must be an insanely violent place. I've heard of Gary being compared to a third world country, this is the first time the comparison was literal...

6. Did anyone else SEE the demeanor of that delegation?
It just seemed to me with all of that "good news" they were uncovering with their investigative team, they would have been smiling, happy, enthusiastic, joyous over this Truth they had witnessed!

Instead, each and every one of them looked deflated and flat. Their words did not match their behavior at all.

11. Honestly ...
I thought they all looked burnt out from an adreneline rush ... I think they were scared shiiteless the whole time they were there, and it showed during the press conference ...

HUGE disconnect between their words and what I saw in their body language ...

29. Because we form opinions based on reality, while they live in a fantasy world based on opinion.
They see what they WANT to see, and spend their time
reinforcing the fantasy with each other.
That's why they always have to have such an ideological
LOCKSTEP of opinion. They know, at least subconsciously,
that a single fact or independant thought could bring
the whole house of cards crashing down.

13. LOL!
Here's something not so LOL.

Units in Germany are heading back to Iraq ten months after their return from Iraq. Units are also being extended, which is becoming more commonplace. One unit due back in June has been extended...for how long, I don't know. Maybe they do, but I wouldn't count on it.

24. They don't even have the troops to patrol in Indiana and the flea
market season is just getting started. What will they do when we have a yard sale in Iran?

There was plenty of yard but no sale, McCain's definition of "security!"

20. Yeah, I kind of see your point
Going to a flea market surrounded by armed-to-the-teeth soldiers, armored Humvees, snipers/sharpshooters on rooftops, and hovering
Blackhawk and Apache helicopters kind of takes the fun out going to an open-air market. Makes you wonder how they chose what to wear for their little adventure in political theater. Hmmmm, what should I wear? Multi-layered kevlar or Dragon Skin?

Better yet. Get rid of those soldiers. He can contract with Blackwater or Titan for the two guards.

17. Well, as far as Sen. McCain goes
I used to respect the man, not always agree, but at least respected him. At least when he was showing his independent streak that gave him credibility.
Now, I am absolutely convinced that has lost, not only any hope of the repug nomination, but what little mind he had left.
At this point in time it is almost sad to watch him, because it all looks pathetic.

26. never been to an outdoor market here in Indiana - where flack jackets
and snipers were needed. - Maybe there is some little town somewhere in the state that I just don't know about.

I hope some of the local papers pick up this quote and the pic and run them together. It is absurd. And it might be just a little offensive and condescending to more than a few of his constituents.
