What Happened to the Immigration Prez?

After heavily promoting immigration reform that is friendly to families, a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and a guest-worker program to fill jobs "no American will do," President Bush appeared to shift dramatically to the right last week. A working proposal for an immigration bill that White House officials drafted behind closed doors with Senate Republicans leaked:

It included a proposal to charge the nation's 12 million illegal aliens $10,000 each to obtain a green card, as well as another that would have guest workers come to the United States for two years without families, then go home for six months without gaining any visa advantage.

"It's just a clear departure," said Kevin Appleby of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, "from what the president said in his Oval Office speech last year."

4. His "plan" is just plain LOONY..
Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 11:05 AM by SoCalDem
People who have successfully evaded detection, bought a house, started a business, have kids born here and in school are NOT going to "turn themselves in" and leave everything here, behinds...and go "back" ..to what?? then wait and come back & pay a fine, and go to the end of the imaginary line..

They will do what they have always done.. they will slink around on the edges of society and try to avoid any confrontation. they pay with cash, and they use family networks to survive.

The ONLY thing that would work is the ONE thing he would never propose..

1. national ID card (biometric-hologram)
2. confiscate businesses of all who hire undocumented
3. JAIL the owners/operators of the businesses.

that legal immigrants have to pay to live here?

It cost my wife that much plus 4 years of paperwork. They're getting a break actually....

Was that on a marriage visa? My husband (from England) came here on a marriage visa, and it cost us around $500 for the filing fees.

5. Just more smoke for the 08 elections is all. No way, No how can they actually enforce any of this.
Heck, you might as well just say that they'll be charged a million dollars for a green card. As long as enforcement of immigration laws is next to non-existent, corporations will keep enticing illegals and paying them. This law(s) will do nothing to change the existing situation, but give them something to fly up the flag pole for 08. "I'm the tough on immigration candidate!"

12. This is VERY family friendly.
Compare it to what most righties want -- An illegal pregnant woman in Georgia recently got arrested for not following police orders when pulled over for speeding. The cops ignored her pleas for medical attention because she was spotting. In fact the cops were laughing about it (hey, she wants us to check her underwear). She miscarried and lost the baby and may not be able to have more kids.

The attitude of the righties in Georgia? -- Well the bitch was illegal, who cares.

So yes, Bush's plan is definately more family friendly.
