She had surgery not because of a life threatening situation or because of an accident but because she wanted to fulfill a certain fantasy-mindset held by certain men. She wasn't good enough as she was to "measure up" to the physical requirements. There are no mental or moral requirements, obviously--this mindset often requires that a woman not have thoughts of her own, or discounts what thoughts she does have. All that matters is a willingness to please.

This is why many more women than men have eating disorders. This is why so many women have a false sense of what their bodies really look like. This is why a smart woman has so many more hurdles to jump over when it comes to a job, etc.

And you know what's funny? The men in MY life don't like the women that look like that. They all have said they want women with more curves (normal women) and more brains.

and well said. Thank you for posting this. I appreciate a post on this strange but real topic that provokes thought.

I think that our society does put pressure on women, in terms of image, that is too often toxic in terms of self-image. Hence, eating disorders are found not only more frequently in women than men, but equally important, more often in our current culture, than in others.

Part of this is definitely related to men. No question. We even witness some comments on DU that tend to reinforce this. Though I suspect they are intended as harmless and in fun, it tends to lend some reinforcement to the idea that men love Barbie Dolls. Again, equally important, as you point out, many men do not think this way.

Further, the unhealthy pressure is also reinforced by some women. This can take many forms. But that is less important than the fact that the pressure is not a male versus female conflict: every decent person should be aware of the pressures that our society places on women -- be they ourselves,our spouse, our sisters, our daughters, or neighbors, co-workers, and friends.

The #1 villian in this is, in fact, the media. Ads showing thin, too thin, and far too thin models. Programs on TV with unrealistic standards of "beauty." Magazines that air-brush "flaws." "News reports" on the Paris Hiltons of the world. Info-mercials about beauty products that you must have to be happy. And, yes, even something as wrong as the contest that this confused, plastic young lady entered in.

but what gets me is that Trump overlooked contest rules about the photographs. I'm one of those folks who tries to follow the rules--my husband cracks jokes about how I won't drive without wearing my seat belt and that I stay below the speed limit even on a deserted road. My concern with this person is that she has learned that her looks can let her get away with breaking the rules. Not an example I would want to set.
