White House On Sykes-Limbaugh: 9/11 Jokes Cross The Line

Two days after comedian Wanda Sykes quipped during the White House Correspondents Association dinner that Rush Limbaugh was likely the 20th hijacker on 9/11 (only he was so strung out on Oxycontin he missed the plane), the White House publicly distanced itself from the remarks.

"There are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy," said spokesman Robert Gibbs. "I don't think there is any doubt that 9/11 is one of them."

This next-day backtrack is fast becoming a standard of the White House correspondents dinner ritual (helped along, of course, by reporters eager to stir up some controversy).

Still, a joke about skin color from a black president is a little off to me. I am pretty liberal and have been know to laugh at the Unitarian Ministers joke about the holes in the feet of Jesus but somehow the skin color thing got to me. you really don't hear many and that is with good reason.

They had to distance themselves from that but notice that they didn't reject it or anything she said.

And this is not a criticism, just an observation. Whereas Cheney/Bush NEVER apologized for anything, and those fuckers broke the country, Obama is eager to not give the press a target. It's probably smart, because it deftly obliterates their ability to spend endless coverage on it. Remember Pastorgate? At first Obama didn't say anything to distance himself, but then the pastor couldn't keep his yap shut, and he finally had to. Regardless, it provided a lot of fodder. He learned that lesson.

But, the price here is that your opposition controls you to an extent. They decide what the issues will be, and you are forced to either endorse or defend. Cheney/Bush just said 'Fuck You', we do what we want. Of course, inside of eight years, they decimated their own party badly, and hopefully, at least one of them is going to jail soon.

I disagree with the idea that the joke was about 9/11, it was about Rush Limbaugh being like a terrorist. What's really sad in the faux controversy, is that even leaving out the 'too far' jokes, her performance was really outstanding.

The other thing that's beyond absurd, is that PIGBOY says worse things on his show every fucking day. Where's the cloud of controversy over that? Why aren't Republican leaders harangued to support or denounce it?
