Hawaii Lawmakers Back The Creation Of 'Islam Day'
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's state Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill to celebrate "Islam Day" — over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote Wednesday. It previously passed the House.

The measure now goes to the governor.

The bill seeks to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions" that Islam and the Islamic world have made.

But the Senate's two Republicans argued that radical Islamists cheered the 9/11 attacks. They also noted that other religions didn't have a special day honored.

1. It's "Islam Day" not "Radical Islam Day" or "Wahabbist Islam Day"

9. It's not setting a precedent ...
we already have Easter and Christmas as national holidays.

But, is Islamday a day off work?

If so, "Salaam, Baby!"

:hi:

6. Separate church and state
let the muslims have their own celebration.

And until I see a huge Islamic revolution on the stranglehold they have over women, refusal to condemn the more radical aspects of their religion and come into the 21st century (like we demand of all fundamentalist groups), I will stay lukewarm.

10. Fer chrissakes. Why not 'Pagan Day'?
Celebrating the achievements of Pythagoras and Ovid?

What about Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto, etc days?

They just want to kiss up to another Abramistic religion, never mind that little clause saying that religion is neither hindered nor promoted by govt.

11. In Hawaii, it would make more sense to celebrate "Buddhism Day"
Unless the population of Hawaii has changed drastically since 1991, there aren't a lot of Muslims there. Plenty of Buddhists, though.

12. We need less religious holidays, not more.
And I say that as a person of faith.

Religion and governments DON'T MIX!
