Wesleyan Shooter May Be Targeting Jews

(CBS/AP) The suspect in a shooting that killed a Wesleyan University student may be targeting the university and the Jewish community, police said Thursday.

Officials said they launched a nationwide manhunt for 29-year-old Stephen Morgan.

Middletown Police Chief Lynn Baldoni said investigators uncovered a connection between him and the victim, Johanna Justin-Jinich, and said the shooting was not a random act.

"Evidence uncovered overnight suggests that Mr. Morgan may be focused on the Wesleyan University campus as well as the Jewish community," Baldoni said at a news conference. "Investigators have been in contact with Wesleyan University and leaders of the Jewish community, urging both to be extra vigilant."

She would not elaborate and did not take questions.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Police on Thursday urged Wesleyan University and local Jewish leaders to be "extra vigilant" after concluding that a man suspected of fatally shooting a Wesleyan student at a bookstore may be targeting the school and Jews.

Officials said they had launched a nationwide manhunt for 29-year-old Stephen Morgan. Authorities believe that Morgan disguised himself with a wig and shot 21-year-old Johanna Justin-Jinich, a junior from Timnath, Colo., at her job at a cafe inside Broad Street Books, a popular bookstore.

Investigators uncovered a connection between Morgan and Justin-Jinich, and believe the shooting was not a random act, Middletown Police Chief Lynn Baldoni said.

Evidence also "suggests that Mr. Morgan may be focused on the Wesleyan University campus as well as the Jewish community," Baldoni said at a news conference Thursday. "Investigators have been in contact with Wesleyan University and leaders of the Jewish community, urging both to be extra vigilant."

(If I, Burt Worm, were on Larry King right now, I'd say this: I'll bet the gunman and victim had an affair. He's a local guy with a love/hate thing for wealthy Jewish college girls. He felt like dirt when she broke up with him and now, after killing her, he wants to kill the class of person she is. He is probably going to wind up killing himself because basically he is now just a stalker robot, and that is what stalker robots do to themselves.)

Update 10:00 a.m. 5-7-09

We have been informed by Middletown Police of new evidence about the suspect in yesterday’s shooting. Although he apparently had a direct link to the victim but no other connection to the Wesleyan community, we have now been made aware that he expressed threats in his personal journals toward Wesleyan and/or its Jewish students. All students are urged to remain vigilant and to stay indoors. Additional security has been deployed accordingly.

We will continue to work with authorities to ensure the safety of students on campus, and there will be increased patrols by Wesleyan Public Safety Officers and Middletown Police. At this time we continue to believe that the safest place for students is in their residences and we will provide additional information as it becomes available.

How would it feel to know you're just a robot following a sinmple program that all stalker robots follow: Meet girl you feel inferior to, turn her off fast, plot to avenge her spurning you, get your chance to pump bullets into her, run and hide, kill yourself. At what point would it be possible to say to one of these machines, you're not a human anymore, and have him stop running this wasteful program in his brain?
