Bristol Palin did an about face on abstinence today on GMA.
As I recall, she had said earlier that abstinence wasn't "realistic." Now she robotically is saying that no, indeed, abstinence IS realistic. Chris Cuomo said "But it wasn't realistic for you." She agreed, but said she "should have" waited and not had sex.

I guess the fundies beat her up pretty bad for stepping out of line.

If I were interviewing her, I would have asked if she is planning on using birth control to prevent any future unwed pregnancies. I'll take some bets that she is.

1. I still feel sorry for Bristol.
Her mother chose to be a politician. But (as far as we know) Bristol did not have any say in the matter. And Bristol is paying the price. It's cruel.

5. Yep. Bristol has no constitutional rights, evidently
Palin does not appear to be in favor of free speech and one wonders if she threatened to throw single mother teen daughter to wolves if she tried it again.

36. I agree
The ugly Tabloid stuff is tough on someone that doesn't choose to be in the spotlight. But once they start granting interviews and going on television shows and directly addressing policies like abstinence only they pretty much become fair game. She appears to have chosen to be a public face, far more than the kids of other Governors.

39. Can she really choose that if Sarah wants her to be out there?
She's still a teen and her mom still plays an important role in her life. Saying that Bristol can choose to keep a low profile assumes that she's not being pressured by someone - probably her mom - to go recant what she said previously about abstinance.

45. I don't feel sorry for Bristol at all.
She's buying into all this hook, line and sinker. Disgusting that she's being a spokesgirl for the skeezy Candie's, while touting all this abstinence bullshit. Mudflats and others have excellent pieces recently re the "not so innocent" Bristol.

and I thought the same thing. She looked scared of saying the wrong thing. Chris was helping her through that interview and I think that helped to ease her.

Yep, she's just a kid...and I feel sorry for her too.

Nothing a lil visit to mama's witchdoctor couldn't cure with old fashioned exorcism.

Geez - I wish they'd all just go the hell away with their hypocritical bs.

Abstinence is such an unrealistic fundie fairy tale.

failin: here's how it works, you play the god card, liberals bad, abortion sends you to hell, and abstinence is good. Okay?

Bristolcream: wait, I already said that abstinence doesn't work.

failin: listen to me missy, I know how this news reporting stuff works! remember I did sports reports! they have a thing called a news cycle. The lemmings out there have already forgotten that!! Understand!! now unless you want to be working the fry machine at mickey D's and living in the back end of a trailer, you better just straighten the hell up!!

Bristolcream: (quietly) but it doesn't work...I miss Levi...

failin: Levi!!! damn that little shit! he ruined everything!!! couldn't keep it in his pants, now you listen to me, you mention that name again and I will make sure that your life is miserable forever!!!

Bristolcream: yes.

failin: yes, what?

Bristolcream: yes, ma'am.

failin: that's better!!! 2012 here I come! You keep riding my coat tails and we will go places!!! I was VP!!!

Bristolcream: Um, no, you were nominated VP by a loser candidate.

failin: quiet you!! that was part of my long range plan of getting the name Pailin out in the publics eye!! now that I have a foot in the door, they will never be able to stop me!! Never, do you hear? NEVER!!!

Bristolcream: (mumbles to herself) I wish Levi were here.

35. Not to mention that she goes on and on about how "awesome" motherhood is.
One of the challenges of preventing teen pregnancy, after no or improper use of birth control, is confused young girls who think having a baby will give them someone who LOVES them unconditionally.

Bristol glosses over the actual challenges of motherhood-- possibly b/c she has an army of famliy helping her out-- and merely says it's "hard", but totally worth it b/c her son is such a joy.

Bristol might as well be up there devouring a rich and decadent slice of cake and telling teens that THEY should choose the bowl of cold oatmeal. "It's the harder choice, but it's the better one. Now, where's my delicious milkshake? Enjoy your plain water!"

Yeah Bristol, you're a real feckin inspiration. I'm SURE kids all over America find you "relatable." :eyes:

As a single mom, with a newborn, this really isn't stress she needs. Her mom may be a complete jackass, but I feel some level of empathy for Bristol as she's been put in a situation that she really shouldn't be in, mostly thanks to the political ambitions of her mom. There's no question who she's getting her talking points from.

43. I thought she said earlier that abstinence only education wasn't realistic
but I could be wrong on that.

I don't mind people encouraging teenagers to abstain just as long as they receive a comprehensive sexual education.

As far as encouraging abstinence, why not force every teenager to take a summer job at Chuck E. Cheese? If that doesn't make you want to glue your zipper shut, I don't know what will. I should run for office. :D

Teenagers are VERY fast to give a huge FU to the "do as I say, not as I do" crowd.

Having Bristol come out as a spokesperson for abstinence will have an opposing affect, if any.
