Student wants to name UW-L mascot Colbert

Under fire from the National Rifle Association, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse might go in a much different direction to name its mascot.

The UW-L campus in January voted to christen its eagle “Eddie.”
But the NRA recently notified UW-L it has a trademarked gun safety mascot with the same name. Pick another name, the NRA advised.

So UW-L will vote again — and this time, there’s a new contender.

UW-L senior Jack Temple is leading a campaign to name the eagle “Colbert,” after Comedy Central TV host Stephen Colbert.

“I’m an avid Colbert fan,” Temple said.

“I thought it part of my duty as a member of the Colbert Nation.”

He came up with the idea while watching the Colbert show a few months ago. Temple thought he’d missed his opportunity, though, as the campus just concluded the “name the eagle” online contest that ended with Eddie as the winner.

But Eddie didn’t fly with the NRA.

NRA secretary Edward Land, in a letter to UW-L, said allowing UW-L’s mascot to bear the same name as its character would be confusing because both are being used in an educational setting.
