with a leading B or M?

Evil maniacs in pulp novels always laugh with initial consonants! And IIRC silent movie villains would do this when tying damsels to the rails too.

5. Both are sounds that can be made if the laugh starts before
the mouth is opened. That is to say, they are laughs that do not originate from a smiling mouth. Hence, they have been commonly used to depict "evil" laughter, where the source of the laughter is spite or bitter mockery of another's defeat (or anticipation thereof). From that, they spread.
