Souter known as low-key, fierce defender of individual rights
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- David who? was the initial reaction of Americans to a little-known judge from New Hampshire named in 1990 to sit on the nation's highest court. Even the nominee didn't know what to think when President George H.W. Bush called him with the news, telling supporters, "I was in a state of virtual shock."

Conservatives say Supreme Court Justice David Souter, nominated by a Republican, was a dissapointment.

David Hackett Souter had only been on a federal appeals court bench for a few months when he was tapped to replace liberal lion William Brennan, a choice many Republicans hoped would move the high court rightward and reshape American law.

Souter resigns from court. Too bad none of the fascists have decided to step down.

1. I hope Kennedy takes the opportunity to retire in the next couple
of years. He is the 'swing' vote. Leave the four horsemen of the apocalypse as a minority for decades.

3. He's taken his responsibilities as a Justice seriously. I used to assume that all the Justices did,
but the petty partisanship of Rehnquist and his cohort showed me I was wrong

4. am i the only one surprised to hear so many newscasters call him 'moderate-liberal?'
at the time of his nomination, my parents thought he was WAY too conservative and were worried about the future of the court...of course, compared to some of those assclowns up there now, Souter is to the left of Castro, so I guess it's all relative

5. Considering who appointed Justice Souter, it is quite clear that
the country dodged a bullet.

6. I am so bummed to lose my favorit Supreme Court justice!!! This quote shows why I adore him:

"What was clear to me was that he hadn't decided that case before he heard it" at oral arguments, recalled Peter Rubin, one of Souter's law clerks that term. "The law for him, unlike many of his conservative colleagues, was not an abstract set of rules totally divorced from its effect in the real world. It wasn't just an intellectual puzzle for him."

And to think I was upset when his nomination was confirmed!! He totally surprised me in a most delightful way. We need more of him on the Supreme Court. Not to diss our other good members of the court, we've got some great people. And some poor excuses for human beings too. For me, David Souter is the best of the best.
