China's problem with opium was exactly hte same as hte uS's problem with weed - it was outlawed but demand remained. The opium wars were a 19th-century version of the DEA's skirmishes with drug runners at the southern border. Has squat to do with the drug in question, but rather the protection of puritanical law vs. the desire for wealth.

The fact that laborers for the British were often paid in opium rather than money was another problem unrelated to the substance itself, but had everything to do with the colonialists wanting an addict labor pool.

I would not say that an opium habit is good but I can't see anything wrong with smoking the resin of a plant (opium) once per season so 4 times a year. Like MDMA, LSD and mushrooms it is a cool drug that can be enjoyed a few times a year responsibly in my opinion. Note I am not talking about the stronger and more addictive heroin.

I got a little bit of the big slab so I had a bit of gold ink but just the tiny curve of one letter. I guess they could come after me but where I live someone smoking hash in their own house is a very very low priority and there are directives saying that for possession to use cannot give someone prison, can open up someone to a fine, but usually involve at worse a trip to the station to fill out a paper and a small fine or just confiscation. Many times police turn a blind eye to people openly smoking in the street so I doub someone like me smoking at home is a target.
