Helen Thomas - Obama's pretty good start
Edited on Thu Apr-30-09 11:23 PM by bigtree

President Obama's 100 days in office have not shaken the world, but he has been compelled to focus on the legacy bequeathed by former President George W. Bush: the worst economic slump since the Great Depression and two wars.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, avoiding any credibility-destroying urge to praise his boss with ridiculous extravagance, gives the president a "B-plus'' on his report card.

"What the president has achieved is something we're proud of,'' Gibbs said, adding: "There is room for improvement.''

Probably the biggest change Obama has brought about is the country's new hopeful spirit, an attitude that we can deal with these problems and that government action can help solve society's ills . . .

1. I unashamedly adore Helen Thomas
She holds fast to her principles regardless of who is in the White House because it is NOT political with her, it is responsible journalism. She is a genuine treasure.

3. Coming from this grand lady, that's praise indeed. I am so very glad she lived to see...
... the Obama presidency. She goes on to give an incisive critique of his foreign policy decisions so far, so the young whippersnapper--er, President Obama--is not exactly off the hook with her yet.

7. she has expressed some disappointment with some of his policies
. . . in a manner which is not reflected in this article. I imagine those DUers were relating those concerns of hers as disappointment.

this sure sounds like 'disappointment to me:

Thomas: “I think he has to be very daring, but I think he plays it very safe, very cautious, which is probably smart, but I’m not sure he’s going to really be as bold as I want him to be,” said Thomas, who is known for voicing critical, usually liberal opinions during press conferences. “I want to see a real transformation—a caring for the people, not just giving a $700 billion bailout to Wall Street while Detroit suffers.”

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0409/21006.html

Thomas: "President Barack Obama seems to be more interested in propping up Wall Street than saving the car companies and the auto workers in Detroit."

8. Not unlike a good percentage of DU.
Each of U.S. has a personal agenda. None of U.S. is the President... at the moment, anyway.

10. Helen is a true humanitarian.
I wish he would ask her more questions instead of Chuckie Todd.

9. In this climate, it may take a truly great president to do pretty well.
If Obama does only a half-assed job, that may make him the best president ever.

And it still may not be enough to save the country. :scared:
