Swine flu present and under control in New Jersey

Samples sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday indicate that five New Jersey residents have confirmed cases of Swine Flu, Gov. Jon Corzine announced Thursday.

The cases involve a 43-year-old Monmouth County woman, a 22-year-old Bergen County woman, and a 14-year-old boy, a 10-year-old girl and a 47-year-old man, all of Burlington County.

“We have been on top of this from the start and will continue to be vigilant as long as the threat to public safety exists,” Corzine said at a conference at the state Department of Health and Human Services in Trenton. “There is no need for alarm but we must all be aware of the situation. I want to assure the people of New Jersey that we are doing everything in our power to contain the spread of this flu virus.”

The three Burlington cases are members of the same family. The two children did not attend school before becoming sick and have not returned to school.

Four of the five individuals recently traveled to Mexico. The fifth traveled to California.

1. Again, no hospitalizations ..........

Medical people are saying that it's rather benign, not as bad as the season influenza from which thousands die every year.

My doctor called me today, wanted to know if I wanted a scrip for Tamiflu. I said I didn't think that would be necessary - I'm not big on medication unless it's absolutely essential (or has really fun side effects).

Then, out of curiosity, I looked up Tamiflu and read about its possible side effects:

Headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, aching joints, insomnia, diarrhea.

Aren't they the very things that define the flu?
