Supreme Court Justice Souter To Retire

NPR.org, April 30, 2009 · NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court's current term.

The court has completed hearing oral arguments for the year and will be issuing rulings and opinions until the end of June.

Souter is expected to remain on the bench until a successor has been chosen and confirmed, which may or may not be accomplished before the court reconvenes in October.

5. Souter's 69--a relative youngster to be retiring. So many justices on the SC
have stayed into their 80s.

6. I am sad about this. I really respect Souter.
He is a good man and I think one of the smartest justices to serve.

8. I agree- he's been a very positive addition,
one who thinks deeply, and outside the box.

7. Didn't Justice Bader-Ginsberg also announce her retirement
from the bench next winter, too?

Hold onto your hats, but if the obstructionist repukes can slow down the appointment of Kathleen Sebellius to HHS, just imagine how long it will take President Obama to fill the vacancies on the Supreme Court.
