Fed says gov't ready to save stress-tested banks
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090424/ap_on_bi_ge/us_banks_stress_tests

WASHINGTON – The Federal Reserve on Friday said the government is prepared to rescue any of the banks that underwent "stress tests" and were deemed vulnerable if the recession worsened sharply. The Fed, in outlining the tests' methodology, said the 19 companies that hold one-half of the loans in the U.S. banking system won't be allowed to fail — even if they fared poorly on the stress tests.

The Fed reinforced its view that major financial firms are "too big to fail," and the government must do whatever is necessary to save them, said former Fed examiner Mark Williams.

(and therefore, to big to exist. Just pouring more money down the memory hole)

We had a good ride, did some cool things, but then went to vegas and blew it all on a massive roll of the dice on sub-prime mortgages.

See you all on the other side.

1. The Paulson/Summers/Geithner Plan Will Work!!!
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 06:24 PM by MannyGoldstein
Honest. It will. Seriously.

We just give all of the middle classes money to the bankers, then something magical happens, then the middle class has more money than before. What's so difficult to understand about that?

3. We can always vote the scoundrels out.
It'd be a lot easier, of course, were we in possession of all those NSA transcripts.

6. I said we are done, not that I'm going to kill myself.
and when I say we, I mean the US financial system.

however, I'm sure there are a few people on wall street praising this faux fix.

I recall a deleted scene from the movie "apocalypse now". It was showing a french family deep in the Vietnamese jungle in an old plantation house. They were carrying on like it was 1947. They were totally oblivious to the world crumbling around them. I view wall street like that.

I couldn't survive if I didn't imagine that something bad wouldn't lead to something better than before.

5. Those who forget the past, etc. "Standing Bear Becomes a Person" ...
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 07:13 PM by puebloknot
... from "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, tells the story of Standing Bear. Here's a clip about that event from Wikipedia:

"In April 1879, Standing Bear sued for a writ of habeas corpus in U.S. District Court in Omaha, Nebraska. The case is called United States ex rel. Standing Bear v. Crook. General Crook was named as the formal defendant because he was holding the Poncas under color of law.

On May 12, 1879, Judge Elmer S. Dundy ruled that "an Indian is a person" within the meaning of the habeas corpus act, and that the government had failed to show a basis under law for the Poncas' captivity.<3> They were therefore freed immediately. This case received the attention of the Hayes administration, and provisions were made for some of the tribe to return to the Niobrara valley."

Sounds kind of similar, doesn't it?
