Some observations on street protests.
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 03:01 PM by meldroc
I just came back from the weekly street anti-war protest that takes place here in Fort Collins. I did notice that signs that push for impeachment of Bush and Cheney are really popular with passers-by. Of course, Congress is far behind what the people want - everyone's still saying "impeachment is off the table," but out on the street, everybody HATES those sons-of-bitches.

I'm thinking that next week, I might come out dangling a stuffed chimp and a stuffed Darth Vader on nooses. I imagine I'll get all sorts of cheers, not a few jeers, and a visit from the Secret Service if I do that though...

(Hi, Agent Mike. Note that I'm only talking about hanging your bosses in effigy. If that isn't legal, it should be.)

Edit: Some more thoughts. Here are some tips on making good protest signs. First, keep the message short. Try to use no more than four words. Use phrases like "IMPEACH BUSH & CHENEY", "NO WAR IN IRAQN", "650,000 DEAD IN IRAQ". If you see guys photographing you from a roof across the street, try "HI FEDS! BUST FOLEY YET?" or "YOUR TAXES AT WORK! ----->" (arrow pointing towards the feds...) If you're in a car driving by a street protest, four words are about all you're going to be able to read. Second, use huge letters. Those four words should fill the entire poster. If they don't, they're too small to read. I normally use foam board and the fattest magic marker I can find so I can write in those big, bold letters quickly.

1. Rock on baby
Rock on....

Join the club. I know I have a file with art work (single finger salute I'm sure). Just let your friends know and if you see a white unmarked van pull up....get the hell out of the way.

2. I know people in Fort Collins, didn't know there was a weekly protest there.
Wild.

Where's it held?

I went through there near election time and just saw all the Musgrave signs. Ugh.

5. They're on Saturdays at noon...
on the northwest corner of College and Mulberry, near Sports Authority.

Don't go to the northeast corner by Safeway - those are the other guys there - the pro-war Support The Troops (but let them rot at Walter Reed) guys.

3. Think you should start
an "Effigies Are Us" business. (Don't know if I spelled the plural of "effigy" correctly.) I've been taking my son to protests since Reagan was in the White House. The one he remembers is when GHWB was occupying the White House. He's 27 now and is, without doubt, a progressive, liberal individual. I couldn't be more proud! He carries on the "fight" with me now and will, I know, long after I'm gone.

4. Don't Kill in my Name...Remember the Dead
Those are two of mine. It is funny because we are having our peace vigils with a church group now and they are all on only having positive , peaceful messages. I had my 'Stop the Killing' sign and one of the women told me that was not appropriate. I was dumbfounded. We had a full size cardboard cut out of George We put a a peace sign t-shirt on him. It really cheered the crowd. Now they are afraid that that is too political. I am not sure how we are going to get to the Impeach phase with this group. We are trying to meld our little community. Life is an experiment. Peace, Kim
