Bill easing smoking ban endorsed
Bill easing smoking ban endorsed

The Associated Press

CARSON CITY, Nev.

A bill that would ease the terms of a voter-approved measure that banned smoking in many Nevada bars and other public places was approved on a 14-5 vote Friday in the state Senate.

SB372, which softens the 2006 Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act, would allow smoking in bars that serve food as long as minors are restricted from entry. Also, businesses could wall off separately ventilated smoking rooms.

Opponents included Sen. John Lee, D-North Las Vegas, a cancer survivor, who said he had "been to God's waiting room" while undergoing chemotherapy, adding that voters did "a public service" by imposing the smoking ban to help prevent health problems caused by second-hand smoke.

"We owe it to our constituents to uphold their decision," he said, adding that business lobbyists who warned that the ban would kill Nevada's tourism industry should have to go through the same public vote process that led to the ban in the first place.

"I think that playing the slots is not that difficult without a cigarette," Lee added.

Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, countered that SB372 doesn't go against the will of Nevada voters because an amendment to SB372 provided protections against second-hand smoke and penalties for violations.

Imagine that - allowing adults to make decisions like whether or not to go to a place that allows smoking (or to work there).

Progressive of them allowing people freedom to make choices (unlike the rw which wants to limit a person's ability to make choices in their life based on religious stuff/etc).

I don't need rw'ers preaching to me and trying to save me (or my soul).\

Freedom to choose where to drink, eat, work. Who can be against that?

4. If you ban smoking in casinos, the gambling industry will die
The casinos are almost completely supported by people with multiple addictions -- and smoking is chief among them.

One of our local casinos has a pretty good buffet breakfast for $6. So, we go there on Saturdays. I'm always amazed at the number of zombified people sitting in front of the slots at 7:45 a.m., chain smoking, sipping on a beer, and turning over their life savings to the Indians.

One local divorce lawyer told me -- "If it wasn't for meth and the casinos, I'd have hardly any business."

6. Too late. The price hikes have (finally) taken cigarettes beyond what I'm willing to pay.
I think that's a good thing, but I do feel for other people. Then again, I'm about as big a nicotine addict as you can be, and haven't had a cig since last Saturday. However, nobody else *has* to be with me, so, if I've turned into a complete, raving asshole over the past week, nobody knows.

7. We should allow people to smoke in public places
right after we allow people to piss in public places.

If you're allowed to smoke while sitting at the bar, I should be allowed to piss while sitting at the bar. After all, why should have to get up and go to a special room to do it. That's discriminatory. If you don't like people pissing in the middle of bars and restaurants, then you're free not to go there.

8. If the bar allowed it I wouldn't go
So it would not affect me. I would go to one that didn't.

9. And what if they all allowed it
The thing with smoking is that if some bars allow it, all of them will.

10. RW'ers are not against smoking. They are in favor of it, as they
all are in favor of air pollution, don't believe in global warming, and think everybody should have a gun and be able to shoot any time and any place they want. Freedom. Or stupidity, like sucking on a stinking cancer stick?
