Vatican 'vetoes' US envoy names (BBC)
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 07:13 PM by eppur_se_muova
By David Willey
BBC News, Rome

The Vatican has rejected at least three possible candidates proposed by Barack Obama to serve as US ambassador to the Holy See, say reliable sources in Rome.

None of the three candidates informally proposed by the Obama administration so far is acceptable to the Pope because of their support for abortion rights.

One of the potential nominees vetoed by the Vatican is Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the former US president.

Conservative Catholics in the US had already criticised her candidacy.

They say her outspoken pro-choice views on abortion made her an unsuitable choice.

LBN already has a thread on CK's nomination, but it is worth noting that ALL THREE noms were rejected. Personally, I'm hoping BHO will forego any meeting with PBX if the Vatican proves obstinate on this issue.

1. I've got a solution
They don't like our first three choices? Then don't send them any. It's not as if they were a real country.

If country XYZ didn't like our choice for ambassador to XYZ, would they have the right to veto the choice?

2. We don't need an ambassador to the Vatican.
If the Nazi Pope wants to turn away everyone we send, then we don't need diplomatic relations with a country that doesn't really exist.

4. Does the Vatican ever consider support for the death penalty?
Because that would rule out almost every candidate.

5. Lightbulb!
Send him an atheist that's opposed to abortion. That'll make his head spin.
