Would those familiar with organic pet food please post information?
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 07:07 PM by DeepModem Mom
Here is a link to an AP article:

Recall expanded to some dry cat food
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070330/ap_on_go_ot/pet_food_recall

"....Meanwhile, Hill's Pet Nutrition recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used. The recall didn't involve any other Prescription Diet or Science Diet products, said the company, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co...."

Also, is organic pet food safe?

ON EDIT: Thanks so much to all who are posting in this thread. I just heard anecdotally of a Beverly Hills vet's office that sells Hill's Prescription to patients and is being deluged with calls. I'm sure they were caught off guard, and are reading from a prepared statement that they can't assure that Hill's Prescription is safe.

7. My cat got sick from the dry food
My vet said no dry food; especially no dry food by Friskies/Purina.

I fed her holistic Halo, and the frequent urination stopped, and her drinking tons of water stopped.

She does not like the holistic Halo brand wet cat food, because of to much vegetables. I gave her holistic Merrick wet cat food today, and she loves it. I am going to try holistic Azmira cat food, as well.

My vet did not imply that it was poison; he just said that Purina/Friskies dry cat food -- is the worst cat food on the market to feed pets.

Then he prescribed a special diet of all wet food.

27. alot of confusion
for years I had heard that Iams and Science Diet were the best of the GROCERY store foods. The implication of course is that grocery foods aren't that great. Which I guess now is true. If your animals seem healthy though since NO PURINA is on the list I wouldn't worry about it. Purina's issues are quality of product and non-nutritional supplements, but if your cats have been on it for awhile with no ill effects I wouldn't worry. I have heard good things about INOVA if you want to go organic. The problem is switching food with cats can be a very delicate issue. Definitely talk to your vet though.

29. Thanks Sue.
I have spent the last hour digging deeper. Purina has endorsed their product, and it does not contain wheat gluten. My cat has shown no ill effect, and my mind is more at ease. Thanks for your input and I will definitely look at Inova for better nutrition for her in the future.

I wish all of our kids good health, and better care from the purveyors moving forward.

dry food for my cat, and she's doing just fine. Wet food... I use Merrick or Blue Spa Selects. I also have some Max Cat. They've all been pretty good. She enjoys them, and I don't believe that any of them are a part of the recall, unless I am missing some thing. Oh... And Eagle Pack. (I buy in bulk, and I have foods fro, all of those brands.)

47. Iams sent me an email
I had subscribed to their website ages ago...They said that their company had tested the dry food after the wet food was found to be poisoned and they assured me it is safe. They say they do not use wheat gluten in any of their dry cat food anyway. But the FDA on TV said it had found melmine or something like that. Then I heard a doctor on TV say that they use this in some of OUR food. So I don't know what to think. I do thing that after Iams sent the email, they do find the food safe, because that would be a heck of a lawsuit if they told you it was safe and it wasn't.

They said they are trying to be sure that their wet foot never is contaminated again.

60. I'm sorry but I just don't trust Iams anymore
Even if it was a different recipe how can your "premium" cat food be made with the same proceses as off brand labels? I think P+G in its effort to mass market Iams (only in grocery stores since P+G bought them) decided to cut corners. Thats a bigger issue to me than the actual safety of the dry food, which my guys were eating with no health effects.

10. My vet- who practices homeopathy, acupuncture and etc.
rec'd Old Mother Hubbard dog food and it has been just wonderful for all of our dogs.

Our first dog had skin problems for YEARS and the vet took one look at him and said to switch his food to this brand. His problems were COMPLETELY resolved in a couple of days. The vet had NO doubt in her mind that his problems were due to the food.

Every other vet had him on steroids, antibiotics and etc- to no avail.

Hope this helps!

13. Two brands that are excellent
Their websites have disclaiimers about their products and the current pet food poisoning:

http://www.flintriver.com/

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

pet food doesn't have to be totally organic, these two companies use people grade ingredients. Might cost a few bucks more, but in the long run you don't have sick animals from junk pet food.

I've used Flint River for over 10 years and can vouch for it. It's the only cat food that ALL my cats like. And my vets comment on my cats' teeth! I have really old cats so maybe that says something...?

Paul Newman claims to be organic but I read somewhere he was using Menu Foods for production... so you can't always trust "organic" not to be touched by this horrific scandal.

I've been using Newman's cat food and another brand that COOP sells: Wellness.

A brand that COOP sells was on the Menu list-- Nutro Max. I checked the UPC and date codes (from Menu's web site) and they didn't match the recall. Won't buy that again anyway.

25. NB on Natural Balance:
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 08:41 PM by musette_sf
it is a GREAT food, no complaints on the quality.

however, the dry cat food DOES contain potatoes which may or may not be a problem for your pet.

a few months ago (NOT MELAMINE RELATED) one of my kids stopped eating, and was puking frequently, and so we took her to the vet. after a long conversation about the foods we fed, we determined that her problem was a sensitivity to some ingredient in her food. we did end up buying a huge bag of some prescription, small molecule, easily digestible, dry food from the vet. none of the ingredients looked too terrible so i was okay with this.

when i got home i went through the ingredients of everything we feed the four kiddos. when i found that Natural Balance dry contained potatoes, it was an intuitive hit -- i checked everything else and nothing else had potatoes as an ingredient. we removed the Natural Balance dry, and Cleo has been fine ever since. well, she did get a shot of cortisone at the vet because her little tummy hurt... but no recurrences since we removed the Natural Balance dry.

we replaced it with Wysong Vitality, and they all love that.

potatoes are in the nightshade family, so something to consider.

44. Towards the end of my girls life,
she ate the Natural Balance for dogs (when we did not feed her real meat leftovers). She loved the NB mixed with the SciDiet dry and never had a problem. Of course she passed last year, before all this mess. My heart goes out to all pet owners who are dealing with this awful situation; I cannot imagine the pain some are experiencing with this. It's heartbreaking.

As for us, we are currently animal-less, in an in-between stage if you will. Between grief at losing a great companion, and hope at adopting another fur baby "one of these days." We should be there soon. I know this, because I'm starting to check out all the adoption sites. So is DH. Good sign. :-)

One thing I will be doing is researching pet foods beforehand, so this thread is a definite keeper. Thanks to all who posted info!

46. You'll know when you're ready and you'll know when you find the right one!
I lost Sally in September 2005 and was devastated. Just inconsolable. I waited about a month and a half to "look" again and thought it was a little soon, but I am single and live alone and have no kids and she was my only cat - the house was a little too quiet. I looked around on different sites and found a pair of brothers (I was hoping to get two at the same time) who looked wonderful - I took one home and he lasted about 20 minutes because the rescue home had spent no time with him and he was completely feral and mean. I felt bad for him, but it wasn't the right time for me to try to tame him - and I don't know that he could be tamed. So, I wondered into the Humane Society a couple of days later - and there was my Maggie, waiting for me! She'd just been put up for adoption that morning, so she was there for about 45 minutes before I walked in. She put her paw up on the glass to "meet" my hand" and I took her name down off the glass, walked over to the desk and told them I needed to meet this cat. It's been love ever since! :loveya:

(And one of these days soon she's going to get a sister too!)

So, take your time and the right one will come along at the right time for you - and I'll be so happy for you when it does!

Your kind words mean a great deal to me, especially since you relate so well to what I'm feeling. Well, I should say what we're feeling - my husband and doggie girl were inseparable, too; family, if you will.

I feel selfish that we haven't gotten a new pet sooner. Our girl died almost a year ago, but she was such a companion that it was exceedingly hard to even think of replacing her for a long while. I have now come to the place where I know no other dog can ever replace her, just a new one will win our hearts. So we keep looking...

One of our problems is we both work all day and dogs are VERY social animals. Our late dog was amenable to alone time - she was very independent - but that is not the case with 90% of dogs, so we worry about that. I have no fear we will find the right one, and I completely agree with you - we will know when we see them. I so look forward to that day, because I miss having a furry critter around to humble me in my self-imposed exalted humanness. ;-)

on edit: smilie overload.

AZBlue said also. Our boy passed on Mothers' Day 1995 from liver cirrhosis. He did have 20 yrs. of life tho. A lady friend from church kept asking me to take one of the stray kittens that she fed. I had to refuse 'cause it was too soon--my heart was fractured. I know it sounded nutty, but during his short illness, I wanted to switch places w/ him. I never knew I could have such deep love for one of God's little ones. We buried him at some friends' rural property since we were leasing at that time. They had a virtual pet cemetary there--she called it 'Petland'--they had pet dogs, kits, birds, ducks, goats and roosters of their own, living and also buried on the property. Our lady friend died in '98 and shortly after I brought myself to go to the local shelter to make a donation in her name. I had absolutely no intention of another pet. After writing a check, I asked if I could go see the doggies--I thot I could handle volunteering for them at least. Approaching the kitty room, I was strongly and mysteriously drawn in--I was powerless. I just took in all the little ones, enjoying them and actually praying over each one that they be saved. But there was one I couldn't tear away from. I opened her cage and held her. She was a bit shy, but there was somethin' about her. I called the hub to stop there & meet me after work since the shelter would soon close for the day. I showed him the little one that 'spoke' to me, and he loved her. But he knew I still didn't want another pet. Yet. All that night, I kept waking up--'Someone' was repeating her name. The next afternoon, I ran out and stopped the hub on the riding lawnmower, and breathlessly said, "I can't stand it anymore. I have to go & see if she got adopted", and he agreed. She was still there (they had a big adoption day going on). I leaned in the cage w/ her, telling her that my heart was still broken over our boy. Then a 'Presence' led me to look at the date she entered the shelter. My adrenaline rushed--she was there a month already, and my legs got weak when I realized what that meant. I ran to the desk, nearly tripping & falling, and blurted, " I want to adopt #!!" They said okay, we'll get you the paperwork (looking at me in a funny way!). I had to leave her there till the beginning of the week so they could have her spayed and checked at the doc's. I hated to leave her there. Came home & announced that we have a new baby girl! I felt like I had my own child--getting all the acoutrements for her. She had that awful collar so she wouldn't pick her stitches. That was the most trying three weeks I ever spent watching her, but worth doing it all over again! They bring joy untold!

Thank you for bearing w/ me in sharing this.

Love to y'all.

72. That's a great story.
It's said that the right animals find us, one way or another. Why are we drawn to one individual in a litter over all others? Why does a particular animal show up at our door? Why was only one left to adopt by the time we got there? Some believe that there are reasons. I won't get into all of the possibilities, but it sure sounds like this is what happened to you. Wishing you and your new kitty a lot of good years together!

73. Oh, P_P, what a lovely story you just told!
I completely understand, and your story just warmed my heart straight through. Thank you very much for sharing that with me. It helps more than you know. :-)

As for knowing when, yep - your heart just lets you know when you see the "one." People who don't have pets probably do not understand, but I certainly do. My girl that I mentioned was an Akita mix, and she was kind of mean. I am not saying this lightly - she was really a problem child, so to speak. I prayed a lot about that, because I felt she might not be trainable (and I had trained quite a few dogs in my day). She had me stumped, though! A real wild child, but goodness I loved her!

I know exactly what you mean about 'someone' telling you what you need to know when it all seems too hard. Mine was: "I picked this one for you. You will learn something you need from her." Funny thing was, I did. She taught me to be much more fearless and much more assertive. She taught me to draw boundaries and stick to them. She taught me to let them down when it was okay. In a nutshell, that beautiful dog changed my life. Which is why I am still waiting a year later! She is a tough act to follow. Don't worry, though, I know I will get another one. I am always humbled by the joy they bring into our lives, and look forward to sharing my heart with another fur baby soon.

Thanks again for such a moving post. It brought tears to my eyes, but in a good way. :-)

My girl did bring the divine back to me (I'd been lost). So yes, sometimes the best gifts come in furry packaging, and not always the coziest at that, LOL.

For the record, you were not self-indulgent OR chatty. You were a good human being relating a beautiful story. For that I thank you so much. It helped me when I didn't even know I still needed it. Bless you for that. :-)

49. I wish I could afford to feed my babies this food, but I feed EIGHT of the little rascals
and they will have to make do with Purina indoor Formula and Costco.

Thankfully, those are not on the list (I feed them only dry food)

However, i fear that the Mom of most of my babies may have eaten some bad food and died.

We have not seen her for a week now. She was impossible to tame...we trapped & spayed her & kept her inside for a month trying to tame her...no dice...so we had to release her.We fed her (dry as well) and provided her with fresh water and a comfy house with an old comforter & pillow inside. She always spent her day lounging in her house, but for a week now we have not seen her. We did not see any evidence in the neighborhood of her being hit by a car ...she was a pretty savvy cat (she's been around for almost 7 years)..

Since she was a "neighborhood cat", I fear that someone else may have been also feeding her, and lord knows what that might have been..

It's such a shame.. She was a beautiful white cat with black markings, but she was W I L D .. and would run at even eye-contact..

I can only take heart in knowing that I raised all of her babies (kept most of them) and tried to make her own life as comfortable as I could ...but I miss seeing that pretty face

28. and for those whose kids are ADDICTED
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 09:09 PM by musette_sf
to the cat food in the little pouches with the gravy...

mine are VERY unhappy because their Nutro Gourmet Max (i.e., MENU FOODS) pouches are gone and have not been replaced...

i was a moderately good parent, i did check the lots and dates on all the pouches we had in the cabinet. nothing matched the recall lots and dates, so i let them eat through what we already had in the cabinet.

but needless to say i will never buy Nutro anything ever again. i was definitely led down the primrose path by Nutro's previous reputation, and had no idea that they dealt with cheap-ass contract manufacturers.

OH HAPPY DAY, i have found another company with little pouches with gravy!!!

http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/productpages/wetpouches_cat.php

i've just ordered them, and i am sure that as soon as the kids see POUCHES, that they will jump for joy.

meanwhile, they are trudging through the many flavors and varieties of canned natural and organic foods that we have been test-driving as replacements for their beloved Nutro pouches. so far no one really likes any of them :-(

31. For kitty addicts....
My vet always said that the wet/canned is better than the pouches. She said she feels like the pouches are "kitty candy". My guys loooove wet food. I of course dumped out my Iams cuts and gravy and on the recommendation of a friend gave cans of Fancy Feast (I think its the special gourmet or something like that. Vets I have asked say Fancy Feast is okay. It does have wheat gluten but its not under recall and not made by Menu foods and looks nothing like the Iams/Nutro stuff. My guys lOOOOVE it. More than even the Iams. I have been calling it "kitty crack". Once they taste it they don't want ANYTHING else.

36. so sorry!
Its probably going to ba a rough go for you. I had an older cat with health issues that needed prescription food and it took ALOT of tries to find something acceptable. I finally did but I can't remember the brand name but I do remember it came from Canada so its probably a Menu food product..:(

37. i remember a Canadian brand of dry food
that *looked* really, really good based on the label and ingredients list... really high-end ingredients and price...

this was a few years ago...

they LOVED it... and then it was taken off of the market due to a similar situation. not as widespread as the Menu Foods debacle, but there were some pet deaths involved.

i don't think i will be buying Canadian pet food any more... sorry Canada :-(

that cat food, I had a hard time getting it for awhile after Canada found its first "mad cow" apparantly the FDA's ban on Canada imports covered the food then.

57. Am trying 'Natural Balance'.
The chicken/liver pate was eaten, but the subsequent variety of canned was licked & pressed down w/ the little tongue, and not much was eaten! The kibble is being eaten, but barely. I had to introduce water-packed people tuna which she'll eat and then had to revert back to some Fancy Feast canned-- but just chicken, turkey/giblets and liver/chicken. What to do, what to do? They make an Ultima (I think) canned & kibble which is next to try and mb some canned turkey or chicken (people). After that, I dunno.

My heart goes out to all parents and families of these little ones who have experienced loss or are going thru distress with concern for their furbabies.

40. I just got a bag of that today
so far, so good. The cats seem to like it. The first ingredient is chicken and there is not a lot of fish in it and no wheat gluten to be seen either. It has spinach and some other good ingredients in it.

I think I'll give Tom Hartmann a call! :D

Thanks!

39. Hi DeepModemMom
What I've done is gone to various sites and ordered samples of the food. Sometimes, if you are lucky, they might send them to you for free, sometimes they cost a nominal amount.

I found a few samples of Flint River Ranch for sale on eBay FYI. You can also order a cat and kitten sample pack from flintriver.com for $3.75 (shipping included - max. of 3). They also sell dog food and samples as well.

I ordered another sample from HealthyPetNet.com of the Cat Sample Pack for $2.95 to cover shipping.

Maybe this is a good way to try the food out on our pets without taking any huge losses on food they won't eat might I suggest?

I have Innova Evo here myself (smallest bag I could find - they don't much care for the type in the larger red/rasberry colored bag that I bought a couple of months ago before this whole thing began). My cats seem to like it (I got it at the health food store). However they do miss that NutraMax Chicken and Senior foods I can tell.

Trail and error is the rule it seems, esp. w/cats. :)

I hope this helps!

Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 02:11 AM by greyhound1966
and most of all it is safe. You can usually get it at smaller pet food stores (they don't make enough to supply the giant chains like PetSmart, PetCo, Wally world, etc.) so you're helping local retailers too.
