2. In Temecula, California. It is near the border of San Diego and Riverside counties.
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 01:20 AM by Kerrytravelers
I can't recall exactly which county it is in, San Diego or Riverside. San Diego, I think.

This is terrible.

ON EDIT: The article says the Riverside Sherriff... so this is in Riverside, not San Diego county.

5. Temecula isn't the middle of nowhere anymore
Huge developments filled with people who drive into San Diego and Orange County to work along with a large retirement population. About 100k live out there, and there are a lot of retreat areas mixed in with the wineries.

6. Only details I could find

Details about the shooting were sketchy. Riverside County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers were scouring a large expanse of open space off California 79.

The spokesman said authorities don't believe the gunman is still at large, suggesting he could be among the three others taken to local hospitals. He said the victims were all Korean and that detectives were struggling with a language barrier.

KTLA News reported that the shooting occurred during some type of church retreat. Fox 11 said early reports indicated that four people had been shot, and two were in critical condition. KCAL-TV said authorities were searching for a 70-year-old man who is believed to be the gunman.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. at the Woodchuck campgrounds.

3. People have become totally desensitized to it all
that's when you know society is really starting to rot from the inside out.

7. Combine inadequate access to mental health care and a lousy economy...
...and you'll see crime of all types rise.

The shootings get the media coverage, but I'll bet domestic abuse, theft, assault, etc. all uptick for the next couple of years.

8. All the media coverage is bringing the psycho copycats out of the woodwork,
I'm afraid.

The more cable news headlines about these killings, the more shootings we're apt to see.

9. I think you may be right
With 20,000 gun deaths a year it seems odd that cable news is suddenly all over the reporting now. I mean certain instances deserve a report but they seem to be just picking a shooting every day to report on it. Thats going to drive people nuts.

10. That copycat thing is a concern...it becomes a more acceptable
way to deal with situations and frustrations for the unsound minds

yet of course they are covered. What's the answer?

When the guy shot the 3 cops those killed at the immigration help center were still on our mind and there was news of father killing 5 kids and mother shooting son on the shooting range...
and I thought about how the nursing home shootings didn't even seem like news anymore

Not that one is surely to blame for the others but it's becoming "standard"

Just grievous.

11. The guy who opened fire at the immigration center was certainly
attempting to copy the Virginia Tech killer, with the mailing of photos of him with guns, etc., to the TV station, making it difficult for the cops to get inside, etc.

There's no doubt in my mind people hear about these things and the light bulb goes on in their heads.

12. That's exactly how I see it. They have probably been thinking
about it in the backs of their troubled minds, but seeing it splashed across front pages and blared ad nauseum on all the 24-hour cable channels brings it to the forefront.

Wasn't there some copycat right after the Virginia Tech shooting? I can't remember.

13. Oh well. More deaths. At least guns are cheap, plentiful & available to any nut out there.
U.S. society made its choice. Remember, Guns Uber Alles, everyone. Stay tuned -- many, many more deaths to come. Just hope you or your children are not in the wrong place at the wrong time.

17. It's a copy cat mentality, I think. More unstable people with guns who decide to take down
other people (and perhaps themselves) intending to go out in a "blaze of glory" and get there fifteen minutes of fame posthumously.
