1. Refer "collection agency" to the Government. Much less worthy people have had their bail-outs ...
You deserve a break. :-) :hi:

9. Agreed.
Corporate personhood. Each one of us is a corporation; a LLC with our own intellectual property (IP)

3. Tell them you're in the process of asking the Treasury Dept for a Bailout
Do they seriously think people can pull $15k outta their butts just because they get a letter?

4. don't panic, i know where you're coming from
if these are federally guaranteed stafford loans, which i imagine they are, you may plead hardship and ask to pay what you can...your credit will be adversely affected of course, but there are alternatives

hang tough!

5. Hmmmmm- why not defer any interest on student loans if you're not working or
better yet offer you the opportunity to write them off by volunteering at a local school or some such.

my idea of an economic stimulus/bailout! I suspect more and more people are in the same situation.

6. Have you tried deferment?
There are a few ways to help with financial difficulties when repaying a student loan. Who holds the loans? Is it Direct/stafford loans(government) or a private bank? I have utilized all means possible to hold off on repaying my loans. I just consolidated 2 of them. That brought the one out of default so that I can get another(yeah, I know) to finally finish my degree.

13. They're US Dep't of Ed loans ...
.... Sallie Mae had them until a few years ago and I found out I could get a better payment by having the DoE buy them, so I did.

16. Call them ASAP...
They really do work with you. I've hardly been able to pay anything on my loans since I was forced to leave school for medical reasons in 2001. I kept deferring them and then I would pay a payment or two and defer again. The interest does still accrue. There are other options. You can see if you can get you payments lowered. I would certainly give them a call.

By the way, I recently got a copy of my credit report and that loan showed as good standing/never late. Which is complete BS, I was behind months at a time before deferring.

14. I would be tempted to make a huge posterboard
and stand in front of the WH or the bank or....?

" Mr. President: where is MY help?
No job and Dept. Educ. wants my Student loan money right now !!!"

Or

" I voted for Pres. Obama and all I got was unemployment and student loan debt"

Can you get local news publicity???

I am serious...let the world know how the average voter is getting screwed over.

15. That's how it feels ....
... like since the Gov't is giving all this money to the banks etc, its putting the extra squeeze on the little guys for every penny possible to help FUND those bailouts.

Fuckity Fuck.
